When you hear the term “used car”, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Some may think of an old rusty Cadillac that belongs in a junkyard. Others may think of that nice Camaro at the used car dealership for sale. Over the years, used car sales have skyrocketed. In 2012, over 40.5 million used cars were purchased in the United States (Atiyeh, 2013). Used cars are in high demand in today’s economy because of the lower prices, slightly higher gas mileage, and that they can be more trustworthy against some of the newer models. With used car sales always climbing, how do buyers know what they are looking for in a vehicle? How do they come down to the final decision of where to purchase the vehicle? Most importantly, how can buyers make sure that they do not get scammed? This paper will take you through the process of purchasing a used vehicle, from deciding on a budget, all the way to the final purchase of your “new” car. One of the very first things a buyer should consider when looking for a car is what kind of car he/she wants. Many different factors can affect the car buying process. For one, the buyer must consider how big of a vehicle he/she wants and safety features like airbags, seatbelts, and working brakes. Itemizing a list of accessories can also help narrow down what kind of car to buy. While some people might prefer a Sedan with a large back seat and seat warmers, others may prefer an extreme luxury car with full stereo systems and miniature televisions. Every person has different tastes in accessories; luckily, there is a vehicle that can fit almost every personality. Most new models have the latest technology installed, although some of the “newer” used cars have the option of adding in those accessories. Consumer Reports is held in the highest regard when it comes to their testing integrity, and the results of their automobile tests are as close to doing it yourself as you can find. Every year, the magazine buys cars anonymously and brings them to their testing center in Connecticut to put the vehicles through their paces, and judges them on their performance. A large portion of their testing is performed with innovative new technologies, while others are judged by a panel of independent industry experts. After nearly 50 tests and thousands of miles being driven in each vehicle, their unbiased findings are then released to the public. Some of the most important factors to consider when buying a vehicle are reliability, safety, economy, and overall value. To better understand how each of these data points is quantified and pre...

The decision to purchase a car is the second largest financial choice a person can make. There are a few options for vehicle financing. Since the majority of people aren’t paying cash outright for their vehicle, figuring out whether to purchase or lease the car can be overwhelming, intimidating and or confusing. Different elements come in to play when deciding whether or not leasing is right for your financial situation and lifestyle. Because the average consumer isn’t educated about the benefits of leasing a vehicle, leases are sometimes not even considered an option. I hope to highlight how there is value in leasing a vehicle, and more drawbacks when it comes to purchasing outright.
The simple car that was easy to fix with some simple tools have now become as complex as a supercomputer on wheels. Most people today have decided that automobiles of today are too complicated and just send their cars to a professional for repairs. As of January 2013, the average age of a vehicle operating on the roads today is 11.4 years old. (Associated Press, 2013). People are holding on to their cars a lot longer than in the past. Although, some claim that it is because today’s cars last longer. There is no doubt that today’s economy is also playing a part in the public’s reluctance to part with their older vehicles. However, cars will always need repairs.
When one goes to buy a used car they should look for some key things,
The first thing to be mindful of when you are looking for a new or used car is the monetary value. New cars often cost more than used cars. There’s also a big difference in the value that each car has. A new car loses its value very quickly. The value of a used car on the other hand is constant for a couple of years. For example, my sister has a new 2008 Toyota Camry that cost about 13,000. The difference is clear in comparing the prices, although they came from the same company. When you are driving a new car, you need to avoid depreciation value. Unless you buy a classic or unusual car, the new car value would drop immediately you drive it out of the dealership lot. The value of the car decreases from 15 to 20 percent. For example, if you were to buy a new car for $20,0...

As most car dealers know there has been a huge boost in customers wishing to personalize their vehicles. Many customers consider their vehicle an extension of their own unique personality. But the key to successfully selling aftermarket products as a dealer is showcasing unique vehicles that will catch the eye of the customer. When the customer sees a one of a kind vehicle with clean smooth car window tinting vs. a car with no window tinting at all they are more likely to go for the one with the car window tinting because it is more appealing. If a customer sees a truck that he likes at a dealership but it doesn't have all the features that he saw initially in an add or commercial he may decide not to buy that truck. The customer is more likely to buy a vehicle if it has at least one or two special aftermarket features.
There are many different automobile companies providing buyers with many styles of cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles. Toronto Star January 14, 2005 present ways to approach the automotive buying process. There are many different surveys, crash reports, and rating systems comparing different companies and their vehicles. Things you should look for when reading these published articles are who conducted the study? Who paid for it? Who gains from it? Who loses? These are all things to keep eye on as some automotive companies will run their own surveys making their products seem overpowering against the competition. Some prove their products are safer then the competition where the competition has been proven time and time again to make that survey seem inaccurate.
