Did you know when Rosa Parks got arrested for not giving up her seat she was sitting in the African American section? Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist that worked with the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) to change African American rights. She was born on February 4th, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. She went to college at the Alabama State Teachers College. After her college education, she became the secretary of the Montgomery branch of the NAACP. “She trained in nonviolent methods of social activism and was therefore well prepared for her historic role” (Matthews). The actions of Rosa Parks were important as they would change the course of African American history.
“Rosa Parks was small as a child and suffered poor health with chronic tonsillitis. Her parents separated when she was young, so her and her mother moved to Pine Level which is right outside the capital of Montgomery. There she grew up with her grandparents and her mom on a farm” (Matthews). “She experienced a lot of racial discrimination on the farm like the time her grandpa stood on their front porch with a shotgun while the Klu Klux Klan marched down their street” (Wikipedia). “Also Rosa Parks and her family were members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, an old independent black denomination founded by free blacks in Philadelphia in the early 19th century. Parks attended Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes for secondary education, but she then dropped out to take care of her mother and grandmother when they became ill. She married Raymond Parks in 1932; both of them were active in civic affairs. Earning her living as a seamstress, she served as the secretary of the Montgomery branch of the NAACP” (Matthews).

Even after the bus protest and the boycott, Parks kept inspiring like with her book she wrote about her experiences in her life. Rosas’ death was a tragic one for all Americans because she had played such a huge role in the U.S., helping change many people’s lives and changing the future of our society.

An event to remember....- While the fight by blacks for civil rights had been going on for years, it took one middle-aged black woman with tired feet and a strong will to really get the battle going. On the 1st of December 1955, seamstress Mrs. Rosa Parks, was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama for not standing and letting a white bus rider take her seat, she was found guilty of the crime of disorderly conduct with a fine of fourteen dollars.
In 1955, African Americans were required by a Montgomery, Alabama city ordinance to sit in the back of all city buses. They had to give up their seats to white American riders if the front of the bus, which was reserved for whites, was full. On December 1, 1955, a few days before the Montgomery Bus Boycott began, Rosa Parks, an African American woman, refused to give up her seat to a white man on the Montgomery bus. When the white seats filled, the driver, J. Fred Blake, asked Rosa Parks and three other African Americans to vacate their seats.

Rosa Parks was a member of the NAACP, lived in Montgomery Alabama, and rode the public bus system. In the south, during this time the buses were segregated which meant that black people had to ride in the back of the bus behind a painted line. White people entered the front of the bus and were compelled to sit in front of the painted line. Most buses at the time had more room for white riders who used the service less than the black ridership. Yet, they could not cross the line even if the seats in the front were empty (Brown-Rose, 2008). Rosa Parks made a bold statement when she sat in the “white section” of a Montgomery bus. She was asked to surrender her seat to a white man, but she did not move and was soon arrested. Her brave action started the Montgomery bus Boycott, with the help of the NAACP, none other than Dr. Martin Luther King’s leadership as part of the Montgomery Improvement Association. Instead of returning to her studies, she got a job at a shirt factory in Montgomery. In 1932, at the age of nineteen, she met and married Raymond Parks; and a year later, with the support of her husband, Rosa earned her high school degree. During this time period, Rosa Parks was known as “The Mother of the Civil Rights Movement”. Rosa Parks died on October 25, 2005 at age 92. Rosa parks felt that everyone should be free and everyone should have the same rights. Rosa Parks was able to read when she was little because she was born 50 years after slavery, in 1913. Parks had a plethora amounts of rewards that she gained. She remained an esteemed figure in the history of American Civil rights activism. In 1979 she earned the Spingarn Award by the NAACP, she received the MArtin Luther King Jr. award in 1980. Also, she got the presidential Medal of Freedom award in 1996, 1999 she earned the Congressional Gold Medal by Bill Clinton. She was also named on of the top 20 most influential people of the 20th century by Times Magazine.

Montgomery Bus Boycotts: Role of Women in the Civil Rights Movement. During the Civil Rights movement of the 1950's and 60's, women played an undeniably significant role in forging the path against discrimination and oppression. Rosa Parks and Jo Ann Robinson were individual women whose efforts deserve recognition for instigating and coordinating the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycotts that would lay precedent for years to come that all people deserve equal treatment despite the color of their skin. The WPC, NAACP, and the Montgomery Churches provided the channels to organize the black public into a group that could not be ignored as well supported the black community throughout the difficult time of the boycott.
