One out of four students report being bullied during the school year (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2015). Discrimination is the main cause of bullying and this form of discrimination is so common. Bullying can cause short-term and long-term problems for the bully and the victims. Bullying is still very prominent today and is often ignored. Research clearly indicates bullying is learned behavior and detrimental to the academic, physical, social and emotional development of all involved – bullies, targets and the bystanders who witness it. Bullying proves a difficult challenge, but it is not a problem that should be ignored. While bullying could just be playful, bullying is still very prominent because self-esteem influences bullying, social media has made bullying even easier, certain areas show more problems with bullying, and there is still bullying in schools and professional settings.
Discrimination and self-esteem can lead to bullying as well. Many people believe that bullying is caused by one having low self-esteem and wanting to feel better by making others feel worse. Recent studies have shown that self-esteem is not the only factor behind bullying. Mary Lamia (2010) claims studies “have found that a bully 's hurtful behavior has more to do with the emotion of shame and less to do with their self-esteem” (Do Bullies Really Have Low Self Esteem?, 2010). According to Lamia, shame can be described as “how you think about yourself and it results from not living up to your own personal standards.” (ibid). Having considered the effects of bullying, prevention needs to occur. Reword. One way to end bullying is to start within the school systems. Assessments within the school can be done to show how frequently and how serious the actions of bullying are (Stopbullying.gov). These assessments could potentially prove to adults how serious the bullying is because adults commonly underestimate the rates of bullying because kids rarely report it (ibid). Another way to prevent bullying is to go straight to the source- the parents and the children. With the input of parents and youth, both can feel safer in the school environment (ibid). Students can contribute their views on bullying and their personal experiences to show school that it is happening.
