Bullying in its many forms, as we all know, is affecting our country, communities and school districts in the severest of ways. My purpose in presenting this information to the school board is so that we can join together in an effort to find ways to put a stop the epidemic of bullying, more specifically the need for a code of conduct on bullying, as well as raise awareness of bullying prevention.
According to the Florida Department of Education or FLDOE, “Florida Statute 1006.147, also known as The Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for All Students Act, requires school districts to adopt an official policy prohibiting bullying and harassment of students and staff on school grounds, at school-sponsored events, and through school computer networks.” (FLDOE, 2015) If we can equip ourselves with the right resources, we can begin to envision a future where students can feel safe and protected by this school district. I feel it is necessary to discuss the definition of bullying as well support the rationale for why a code of conduct for bullying is needed.
We may often find that bullying and harassment are grouped together when discussing the topic of bullying. The FLDOE defines bullying and or harassment as: “Systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more students or employees that is severe or pervasive enough to create an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment; or unreasonably interfere with the individual’s school performance or participation.” According to stopbullying.gov, bullying can also be defined as unwanted or aggressive behavior amongst school aged children. While teachers, school districts and school officials are expected to adequately supervise children acting as In loco parentis during school related events, we cannot be reasonably expected to follow behind children every moment of the day. This is why educating our children on the impact of bullying is so critical.
It is imperative that a comprehensive code of conduct be developed in our district for the prevention of bullying and harassment. I feel the superintendent and his board members needs to commit themselves to working towards creating a safe and secure district that is free from bullying for every one of its students and employees.
