Definition:
The words bullying and harassment are often thrown out, yet a good majority of the time, the context that the vocabulary is used in is incorrect. Bullying and harassment are similar in context and idea, but have several key differences. Bullying is the act of actively and purposefully going out of one’s way to cause either physical or emotional harm to another individual. The victim of bullying is the ‘weaker’ of the two - referring to physicality or an imbalance of power that the victim does not see reason in fighting back in the vast majority of occurrences. It is a repetitive act that the bully continually strives for to make the bullied seem less desirable to others in some cases. Harassment however, is non-physical. So, there isn’t quite so much of an imbalance of power. In actuality there is more of an equality of power as the harassed fights back against the harasser. Therein lies the difference between the two - in one the victim passively and docilely takes the physical or emotional damage from the bullier but in the other both parties actively trade barbs and fight back. There is also the added difference of gender as well. Women of all ages tend to be less physical and harass more than women actively bullying others compared to men of all ages who have the tendency to bully more than harass due to physicality. Harassment also tends to occur frequently over social media (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.). The similarity in the center of this whole storm is that bullies are often harassers whereas not all harassers are bullies unless threats come into play. Despite knowledge of what bullying and harassment are, there are different kinds of both.

...e individual’s ire: the bully. While harassment is nowhere near as severe physically, there is the serious threat of emotional upheaval and personality changing either subtly over time or all at once overnight - the latter being far more uncommon and should raise several flags about personality disorders. The addition of social media aids and abets the usage of cyber harassment and its numerous cousins, giving the harasser(s) the protection of anonymity to spit out cruel and spiteful sentences that normally would never be said directly to the person being harassed. As such, people who only have one side of the story also jump in with opinions leading to digital pileon and outing, and above all else, cyber harassment. Harassment and bullying may go hand in hand with one another, but that does not give the right for a human being to use such tactics against one another.
