Poet Gwendolyn Brooks states, “Art Hurts. Art urges voyages - and it is easier to stay at home” which is true for many viewers when experiencing Bruce Nauman’s work. Nauman is classified as a contemporary American artist whose works also incorporate ideas of post-modernism and minimalism. He has been making art since the early 1960’s and has moved through many different mediums as his art progressed and his style changed. At first Nauman was a painter who soon ended that career and turned to sculpting, photography, film, and video. Bruce Nauman’s works of art have interested me and inspired my final assignment by his professional legacy, inspirations, and techniques.
Although Nauman is now one of the most talked about artists in today’s world, art was not always his main interest. As a child Nauman was shy and often alone, as a result he was very passionate about music. He studied piano, guitar, and upright bass and played in bands throughout high school and college. Having a childhood filled with music has influenced his works and contributes to the success of his use of sound and rhythm in his videos and installations. Nauman graduated from college into a career of painting but soon realized that he could not get the reactions from his viewers that he wanted through the medium of paint and began to explore sculpture. His sculptures are known for being non-functional and being made from “non-art” materials. Nauman then turns to incorporating video and sound into his sculptural installations, and then creating complete video works. In his later years he begins producing “sculptures” that are neon signs, often provocative and suggestive. People usually expect to see paintings and sculptures in Art Galleries. Imagine the surprise one finds when they are presented with a man stitching his face into a bizarre caricature, or connected to a machine which controls the artist’s body. These shocking pieces of performance art come under the broad umbrella that is Postmodernism. Emphasis on meaning and shock value has replaced traditional skills and aesthetic values evident in the earlier Modernist movements.
Artists are masters of manipulation. They create unimaginably realistic works of art by using tools, be it a paintbrush or a chisel as vehicles for their imagination to convey certain emotions or thoughts. Olympia, by Manet and Bierstadt’s Sierra Nevada Mountains both are mid nineteenth century paintings that provide the viewer with different levels of domain over the subject.
Intro: In Steven Connor’s ‘Ears Have Walls: On Hearing Art’ (2005), Connor presents us with the idea that sound art has either gone outside or has the capacity to bring the outside inside. Sound work makes us aware of the continuing emphasis upon division and partition that continues to exist even in the most radically revisable or polymorphous gallery space, because sound spreads and leaks, like odour. Unlike music, Sound Art usually does not require silence for its proper presentation.
Through times of personal struggle and tribulations, he stayed connected to the world through these works of art he created. His untitled piece he created in 1981, was another example of how he connected to the world. By creating it as an untraditional portrait of himself, Basquiat was able to better portray himself to the world. From the colors, to the lines, to the symbols Basquiat used in this piece, he drew direct connection between his life and this raw image of a skull. Robert Motherwell unlocked creative forces during a time when Abstract Expression was frowned upon. Motherwell gave art a voice. He used raw emotional vitality during an era when American painting had become the prevailing force in international art. The role of Motherwell was quite distinctive. It helped to give the onlooker a sense of historical realization that such work can be perceived as not for what it is but what we think it is. It changed the audience’s awareness of reality. Andy Goldsworthy is one of the best artists because he has such a wonderful mind. He is creative with all his art pieces. I picked him because he enjoys working with nature and all his pieces are so beautiful. Also, not only is he a sculptor, but a photographer. He enjoys seeing how his art changes within time. He stated in the film we watched in class named Rivers and Tides, that all his work is temporary because they all deal with nature. I shall be discussing about Goldsworthy’s life, the reasons why I chose him and the wonderful benefits I received from taking this class.
Artists have a knowledge of all the artists that preceding them, creating a visual vocabulary from the art that they have seen and understand. For Jean-Michel Basquiat, that knowledge translates into his work, despite never having formal training in an art school. It is his awareness and understanding of the culture that surrounds him that brings a layer of sophistication to his painting, setting it apart from street graffiti that has been painted on canvas. Basquiat’s Untitled (Julius Caesar on Gold) (1981) is a confrontation of his own identity that is created with the visual vocabulary of artists that preceded him.
Art is a very important part of humanity’s history, and it can be found anywhere from the walls of caves to the halls of museums. The artists that created these works of art were influenced by a multitude of factors including personal issues, politics, and other art movements. Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh, two wildly popular artists, have left behind artwork, that to this day, influences and fascinates people around the world. Their painting styles and personal lives are vastly different, but both artists managed to capture the emotions that they were feeling and used them to create artwork.
The neo-expressionist movement in America lasted from the late 70s and came to an end in the early 90s. The movement was a revival of expressionism, a style in which an artist portrays emotional experience into their work (Sandler, 227). It was also a response to the popular art style of the time called minimalism, which involved mostly blank canvases or lines. Neo-expressionism, on the other hand, was raw emotion and chaos. The main figures of the movement were Julian Schnabel, David Salle, and Ada Applebroog. A pioneer of the movement, and also the focus of this essay, is Jean-Michel Basquiat. In the Book Bruce Lee: They Died too Young, writer Jon Lewis tells the story of the greatest martial artist that ever lived. Known as Lee Jun Fan only to his family, Bruce Lee was an enthusiastic boy who took a special interest in the martial arts. Unfortunately,his life was cut short at the age of only thirty-two. Through this short yet unbelievably incredible life, Bruce Lee still proves to be an excellent role model due to his discipline,determination, and self-improvement.
A conventional face represents an idealised self-portrait. In ‘Transfiguration’, Olivier de Sagazan builds an existential performance based on layers of clay that he paints onto his face and body to transform, disfigure and take apart his own figure from the physical world that constraints his emotions and passions. Jolting viewers out of ordinary patterns of thinking. Sagazan’s face test his viewers perceptions of the totemic face, the grotesque face, the face in performance, the violent face—all the while creating a dialogue between past, present, and what’s yet to come.
