Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. There are many different types of cancer that are affecting people all over. Breast Cancer is one of these, and is found in man and women. Over 200,000 women and 1,300 men have been diagnosed with breast cancer this year. One in eight women will detect breast cancer in their lifetime. Men are less than one percent of the cases of breast cancer that are detected. Although prevention is not yet available, early detection is the best way to handle breast cancer, which can be treated in many ways.
Breast cancer is a malignant tumor found in the glandular tissue of the breast. This tumor is called a carcinoma, which causes a single abnormal cell to multiple at rapid rates. A malignant tumor damages tissue and can spread. Cancer spreads when it breaks away and gets into the bloodstream. The tumor can be removed but there is still a possibility that they will grow back. When breast cancer spreads it is called metastatic breast cancer. If it is a benign tumor it is non cancerous, will not spread, but could damage some tissue. They are also not life- threatening and can be removed, which they rarely grow back.
Breasts are glands that can produce milk. There are two main types of breast cancer, ductal carcinoma and lobular carcinoma. Ductal carcinoma is cancer in the lining of milk ducts of the breast. Lobular carcinoma is cancer in the lobules where breast milk is produced.

There is a five-year survival rate for women with breast cancer. The percentage of survival has risen from 72 to 96. If the cancer has spread to other tissue then the rate goes down to 78. The hope of recovering from the diagnosis of breast cancer is extremely high. Women are becoming a lot more optimistic about being diagnosis with breast cancer. It is highly recommended that they see a physician regularly and give them themselves self-breast examinations.
Breast cancer kills about 39, 800 women a year and about 400 men. Self-examination is one way to detect breast cancer early and give you a better chance of recovering from it. Many treatments are available and can help get rid of breast cancer. Even though there is no prevention for this cancer yet, detecting symptoms early and receiving treatment is the best way to get rid of breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer to affect women, and is the second highest cause of their mortality(Pegg 14 Introduction). The good thing is, because of mammography, breast cancer mortality has decreased in the U.S. by nearly 40% since 1990(Mammography Saves Lives). Mammography is medical imaging that uses x-rays to see inside the breasts and is used for detection and diagnosis of breast cancer. Having an annual mammogram is important and could really save lives. In fact, it is recommended by the American College of Radiology and the Society for breast imaging that women receive mammograms annually starting at age 40(Mammography Saves Lives).
Fewer than ten percent of most cancers are thought to be due to strong hereditary factors. Many physicians believe that prevention is the best way to effectively tackle cancer. One of those factors in prevention is the individual knowing their family history so that they can develop an awareness of their families' cancer lineage. The patient presented with a self-detected 23mm grade 2 ductal carcinoma involving the right upper quadrant of the right. The patient performs regular breast self-examination(BSE) to detect any lump before advanced symptoms manifest. Other symptoms included nipple discharge or retraction, skin changes, alteration in breast contour, lymphadenopathy, mammographic abnormality and distant metastasis. Subsequently, a core biopsy has been done to make a definitive diagnosis, confirmed that a ductal carcinoma with surrounding DCIS (Ductal carcinoma in Situ). She underwent a wide local excision and a sentinel lymph node biopsy. It revealed a 23mm mixed DCIS and ductal carcinoma with grade 2 histology and the sentinel lymph node was negative. The tumour was oestrogen and progesterone receptor positive and non-amplified for HER-2. There was no evidence of lymphovascular invasion. The patient has no family history of breast cancer.
If one of my family members found out that she had an increased risk of breast cancer, then I would recommend for her to try the anticancer drug tamoxifen first to see how much it reduces her risk. If there were not much of a decrease, then I would recommend prophylactic mastectomy because it gradually reduces the risk of developing cancer. The National Cancer Institute states that prophylactic mastectomy reduces the risk of breast cancer by at least 95% in women who have an acquired mutation in the BCRA1 ore BCRA2 gene and by 90% in women who have a family history of breast cancer ("Surgery to reduce," 2013).
Breast cancer does not discriminate and can happen to anyone at any age. To prevent this disease, one must take the necessary precautions to lower the risk factors. In fact, there are several local and national events to remind people of breast cancer’s existence. Many people do not know this, but there are numerous ways that they can protect themselves against this disease or find the ailment early enough that it can be treated. If breast cancer is found early enough, it is fairly easy to treat.
To conclude, I am passionate about sharing the emphasis for ALL women to do monthly self check breast exams along with an annual breast mammogram. These exams and tests are mandatory in order to detect early stage breast cancer. Remember, age is just a number. Cancer can and does affect young people! The emotional journey was a shocking wakeup call for me and the experience has affected everyone in my family in one way or another. I am proud to say that I am a 2.5 year breast cancer survivor! I want all who are dealing with this disease to know that when in doubt, turn to that infamous pink ribbon for a symbol of faith, hope, and courage, as you move forward.
A 55 year old woman who appears healthy and has no apparent symptoms of a disease goes to see her gynecologist regularly. Knowing that she has reached the age group highest at risk for breast cancer, she gets a mammogram every two years in order to detect it at its earliest stage.
Every 13 minutes one women will die in the U.S. from breast cancer which makes it the second top cause of death in women. Every 19 seconds there will be someone that will be diagnosed with this disease. Did you know there is expected to be 330,080 new cases of breast cancer here in the U.S. in 2018? One battle that is not easy to fight, but winning the battle is worth it all is breast cancer. The reason I chose to write about breast cancer is because my aunt who means a lot to me was diagnosed with it a few years ago. Many people hear and discuss about breast, but they do not what it means and why it is important. When a tumor that is malignant is found in the cells in the breast and its spreads through the surrounding tissues in the breast is known as breast cancer. Most women are not usually alert if they have the disease because they do not know how to check for lumps in their breasts. Some do not even know the common symptoms for breast cancer. Most women do not know that can check for lumps in their breast by themselves by doing a self-examination. In the self-examination, the woman can wait until they are in the shower or while they are lying down. They can take three fingers and move it in a circular motion, gently around the breast and feel for lumps and knots. Women can squeeze each nipple lightly to make sure there is no discharge coming out during the self-examination. However, majority of women do have lumps in their breast, but it is normal.

The most common cancer amongst women other than skin cancer is breast cancer. It is known that one out of eight women will be diangnoced will breast cancer in their lifetime. It is estimated that in 2016 an approximate number of 40,450 women will be dead due to breast cancer (ACS 2016). There are two stages of breast cancer which are carcinoma in situ (CIS) and invasive cancer. CIS is the early stage of cancer and invasive cancer is when the cancer grows into the breast tissue and it becomes part of the cancer. It is estimated about 246,660 invasive cancer patients will be discovered and 61,000 CIS patients as well (ASC 2016).
