Brave New World - Unit Essay

In 1932; Aldous Huxley published the classic novel Brave New World. The novel is about a futuristic controlled utopian/dystopian society, which seems successful and stable, yet evil and uncompassionate. The regime of Brave New World strongly enforces the indulgence in drugs and casual sex, caste systems, along with other various issues that would be considered unethical in our present Western society. Although Brave New World has many literary values; the novel’s most apparent literary value lies in the concept of establishing a fake morality. This fake morality and its shallow values; dominate an authoritarian regime; where choices and real life experiences are denied of people. This situation creates a fake perspective, frustration and a highly manipulative existence. All of which causes destruction and confusion in the lives of people with individuality. In Brave New World the process of populating the earth is through fertilizing, decanting, and conditioning. Fertilizing takes place when embryos are placed in bottle and fertilized. Decanting is the process which takes the place of live birth. Then conditioning is the process of literally brainwashing the infants with the “morality”, culture, and philosophy of Brave New World. Through the conditioning they are taught to be deprived of literature and deities, the common sense of “what is right and what is wrong”. Through the conditioning they are also taught to scorn those who do not conform to the set standards of behaviour. When John, Bernard and Helmholtz were arrested they paid a visit to the Controller; Mustapha Mond. While Helmholtz and Bernard barely said anything while in the Controller’s office, John and Mond took up most of the dialogue. However, while John’s downward spiral of his mental and emotional state in the Brave New World and his unwillingness to accept their values cause him to leave London, his final conformity and unwilling acceptance to the Brave New World ideals cause the final tragedy at the end of the novel, revealing that he would have never been able to survive in this society, for he was bound to be tainted by their values.

    Brave New World is a remarkable journey into the future wherein mankind is dehumanized by the progress and misuse of technology to the point where society is a laboratory produced race of beings who are clones devoid of identity only able to worship the three things they have been preconditioned to love:  "Henry Ford, their idol; Soma, a wonder drug; and sex" (Dusterhoof, Guynn, Patterson, Shaw, Wroten and Yuhasz  1).  The misuse of perfected technologies, especially those allowing the manipulation of the human brain and genes, have created a pleasure-seeking world where there is no such thing as spiritual experience, just pleasures of the flesh.  In the face of a transcendent religion, the inhabitants (genetically engineered to exist in one of five classes and condition to believe that the class within which they fall is the best one for them) lose their will to rebel against the capitalistic class-divisions of their society.  Psychological mottoes and rigid class divisions have replaced traditional societal values such as family, religion and freedom.  A wonder drug that removes all psychological pain, the pursuit of carnal pleasures, and the replacement of identity and soul with idol worship of a Henry Ford type savior serve to create a dystopia that is frightening as well as the path already being forged in society when he wrote the work in the early 1930s.
