While I was reading “shitty first draft” by, Anne Lamott I read a lot of good ideas on how to write well written papers. In my mind i’ve always thought that it was right to do a first draft because everything that you throw in there is just for your ideas not for everyone to see and that is exactly what anne lamott states in “shitty first drafts”. In my imagination I always figured that authors just sat down and already had in mind what they had to write but that is not true, most writers often just make a shitty draft so that they can organize their books etc. correctly. Lamott also stated that when she would write she would just write for example freewrite when you right without making and corrections, just writing the first thing that pops to your mind and it is possible that when you read it over you’ll get your perfect written work. When i read the title of Anne Lamott’s paper and read “shitty first draft” i was completely confused and now that i’ve read what she has to say and writing and who she is it makes me want to read one of her books, and while i read i 'm probably going to be

I related so much to her story that while i was reading i turned so red. The story about what happened to her is my life ever since i was in middle school. I always turned tomato red when i had to present or even read in front of my class. The way she typed everything in detail is what made me feel like i was in her position. Like i stated before it seemed that she sat there already knowing what she was going to write, but as i learned from the stories before it all went down with a “shitty first draft”. I would have to say that i completely loved this story it was a short well described paper. I stand up and applaud for this girl. Not only for writing such a good spot of time paper but for being brave and having to live through that through middle
“Once people actually write to others, they do things to them, they act on them. Perhaps you have not thought of your own writing as doing something, as acting on readers” (Schmidt and Kopple). She states another time when she says, “I know some very great writers, writers you love who write beautifully and have made a great deal of money, not one them sits down routinely feeling widely enthusiastic and confident. Not one of them writes elegant first drafts” (Lamott). This is yet another example of Lamott going back to the subject that first drafts are supposed to be bad. There is one example of bad rhetoric and it is when she says, “Not one of them writes elegant drafts. All right, one of them does, but we do not like her very much. We do not think that she has a rich inner life or that God likes her or can even stand her.” At first she says that everyone writes bad first drafts and then she brings up how one person doesn’t need to, she went against what she just said and that might cause confusion for the reader. Lamott would tell this purpose to this audience because she wants them to improve in their writing. Anne Lamott wants to achieve the success of helping everyone excel in his or her writing. She wants to inform writers that all first drafts should be bad. She does not want them to feel down on themselves, and to continue writing. This purpose is important because this
...was outstanding. She gives great insight to the horrors and the suffering and allows the reader to be placed into the same place with a large understanding of the emotions that took place. The only thing to complain about is the prolonging amount of detail on the dates and statistics. It’s hard to follow and difficult for one to pay attention and that’s where it became mundane. I can definitely confirm that it was worth the purchase and the time spent into the read. I could honestly say that I’ve already recommended it to others, and I will continue to do so. The people I’d recommend it to though is people interested in the subject and overly eager to learn about new things as opposed to my buddies.
The book was very inspiring and I think it covered a lot of great information. Something that Joanne Crutchfield managed to do very well was paint vivid pictures with her words. Everything was so detailed and descriptive, I was really drawn in by that. The use of imagery made the topics more relatable in a sense. I also liked how the book touched on the topic of mental health. Mental health issues affect everyone however, in the black community those health issues go unnoticed or unattended to. The Author shared her story of depression and how she dealt with it. I thought that aspect of the memoir was great, I think that it was wonderful that she shed a light on mental health. On the other hand the book was a little difficult to follow with the way the chapters were set up. Other than that I thought the book was good and I really
Through out the Summer, I was back at home with a part time job at a very fancy restaurant and doing Summer school. When the fall came I was all set and registered at the University of Toronto where Mary had teached. No matter where I walked in the school something would remind me of her. I was in a nursing program and that first week I had seen the most beautiful girl alive, she almost looked exactly like Mary. She had long brown hair and big blue eyes, this girl was a one of a kind. I finally grew the nerve to go talk to her. " Hello, how are you?'' I asked. "Good afternoon, I'm good thanks.'' Just the way she talked made me think of her. "My name's Franklin Crabbe, yours?" She looked nervous then responded : " My name's Christina Pallas" Pallas? That was Mary's last name, I wonder if she knew her.
There is this teenage girl name Leah who lived in New York, she was ending her first year of high school as a freshman at Flushing High School. On the last month of classes around June she was hanging around with her best friend Henry. After class, they would hang out together and go to the city to explore and waste time, but there was one thing Leah had to tell Henry, her family had to move to Mexico because her parents thought that they will have a better life. So Leah had to leave with them. She told Henry about her moving with her family to Mexico, so they decided to go out to places before she left. They went out to the theatres, walked around the city, and get something to eat like Burger Kings or McDonalds. It was soon Leah had to leave,
By reading, Anne Lamott’s essay, her writing process is interesting, in my opinion. She explains that her writing isn’t always flawless but rather shitty in the beginning. Anne writes one “shitty” draft and after that she analyzes her draft. By doing this she takes out words or finds a new beginning on the second page or as she says finding something great on the last sentence on page six. I think the process Anne takes is important to her because she not only can say anything in her shitty draft but the freedom she has. She doesn’t have to worry about anyone read that draft expect her.
How a death squad came into her house one night and took her family, except her because she hid in the closet like her father told her too. Later she escaped to the neighbor’s house, where the neighbors took her and arranged people to sneak her out the country. Because her father was an editor her father thought that they had so much influence that they would be safe. She never saw her family again. They disappeared.
Both Frahm and Lamott stress the importance to not worry about anyone but yourself when you are writing. The writer is always justified in following their own writing path because it is their work of art. The reader, of course, needs to be considered while writing through proper organization of ideas and flow in the writing piece, but the thoughts and ideas of the writer should be taken in consideration first. Lamott explains that it you need to silence the inner critic, “put the lid on, and watch all these mouse people clawing at the glass, jabbering away, trying to make you feel crummy” (Lamott 264). Simply ignore everyone else’s opinions, stick true to yourself, and focus on you and your draft to get the best possible outcome.
This is another part of my life where I am lucky that my parents where able to grow from their experiences and raise their children differently. I was appalled when I read how horribly Reyna’s grandmother treated her and her siblings. It genuinely made my skin crawl reading the horrible stuff they had to endure. I am upset when thinking that these things happen a lot to many children in the world. Reyna did a great job describing the life of a child that lives in an abusive home. It broke my heart when Reyna spoke about being afraid of her father and not understanding how the man who was suppose to protect her could do this. I also thought it was incredible how she was able to forgive him. It obviously was not an easy process for her and her siblings, but I personally do think I would be able to forgive my parents if they put me through that kind of torment. Reading this book was an amazing eye opening experience that has shown me the struggles that many Mexican-American and Latino families go
Draft day. The day that will change my life forever, and I am ready. I had been a pitcher, pitching for the Villanova Wildcats, but then tragedy struck. I tore my A.C.L. after a line drive nailed my knee, and I screamed in pain. I was carried off of the field, and the trainers told me that I had tore my A.C.L. on opening day of my senior year. Today, I want to go to the big leagues, and to win the World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies.
This article “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott help me understand that every good writer struggle to write their first draft and it might not be perfect at first but with a lot of dedication and effort everything could be done as expected. know that even the best published book started out with “Shitty First Drafts” help me to not be too critical to my first draft and having a little bit more confidences about my writing. I would apply this lesson whenever I have a writing assignment and I am get frustrated on how to start my essay, I would remember that all writers went through this stage of anxiety and not comfortable about their first draft. I would definitely recommend this article to a student that is starting their first composition
Who would you choose in the 2015 NFL Draft. The consensus of today's NFL is that you need a good Quarterback and good Wide Receivers to be successful, but what if there was a Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson, or even a Adrian Peterson. Would you take them over a higher projected Quarterback. Over the recent years of the NFL Draft the mind set has switched from a running game being the best method to score points, to a potent passing attack where you throw the ball more than ever before, but why is this? This may be due to the talent of the players and the new rules of the draft.
I think that Deborah is a smart person with a powerful imagination, who makes it through some very real problems. I feel that some of the blame should be directed towards the parents, but I also realize that they have their own problems. Also, this story takes place during a very different time than that we live in today. Hopefully, our society is educated to understand that sometimes there are situations above our own control. We then must look to the medical profession to provide answers to the questions we have.
It seemed like a normal day when I entered Mrs. A’s AP Language and Composition class, but little did I know that she was going to assign a very important project that was going to take forever. I took my seat and wrote down what was on the board. Then I sat patiently and waited for Mrs. A to come explain what we were doing today. When the tardy bell rang, Mrs. A glided into the room and gave us all a stack of papers. She then proceeded to discuss our upcoming assignment, a memoir. As she explained the very important assignment, I wondered whom I would write about. No one really came to mind to write about and I thought for sure I would never be able to get this thing done on time. I finally decided that I would write in on my mother, Kari Jenson. I knew I would probably put the project off until the very end and do it the weekend before even though it would get on my mom’s nerves. Putting work off was just how I did everything, it worked for me. When I arrived home from school that day, I told mom about the project. I told her I would most likely write it about her and she was overjoyed.
I learned the importance of making several drafts for one paper. Every writer can always make improvements because a paper is never perfect on the first draft. At least three drafts should be made before submitting. Secondly, it is important for ideas to be organized. One idea should smoothly transition into the next for the reader to easily understand the author’s arguments. Thirdly, it is helpful to have others give corrections on the student’s paper. Asking the professor or peers for critiques allows to see possible errors and ways to make the paper
