The book of Genesis 1-11 gives us a teaching and lays a foundation for the truth that is expressed later in the bible as it makes an assumption that God is the creator of the universe and all it holds. The scriptures in this books gives an expression of God as being just, love, wrath, holy and grace. This scripture enables us to understand how we should view the world and God’s part in the creation and the recreation of the whole universe. In the scripture, God formed the universe in six days. This is evident by the words that are used. For example, in the scripture, Moses uses the word “Yom” to mean day. In the book of genesis, God shows us that he gave us the gift of relationships by the creation of Adam and Eve. Eve was created from Adam’s rib. In Genesis 2:24, it says, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united with his wife, and they become one flesh.” In this, we are able to see the joy of being in a relationship as Adam and Eve live in peace and harmony and they do things together. It however gets to a point when Adam and eve sin. This is the time when trouble is thus sent down to the earth and in the scripture this is seen as being the genesis of all problems (Brueggeman, (2010). When they are questioned by the Lord God, Adam puts the blame on Eve and hence Eve goes ahead to blame the serpent. This thus depicts what happens in the world today. We as human beings do not take responsibility of our own problems. This gives us a glimpse on how these came into place right from the beginning of life itself. Is we are believers of God as well as the Bible, then we should allow these teachings to give us a guidance in our lives as well as shape our world view. In this case, how we treat each other, relationships such as marriages, who we are as human beings as well as evolution should thus be affected and be based on these teachings. The Bible shows its clarity to the believers of the Word of God as it helps us understand right from the beginning, step-by-step about the love that our good Lord has for us all. From the very beginning of Genesis, in the description of the Eden story, tension arises between Eve and the divine process. Eve is tricked by the serpent to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. She not only defies God and eats the fruit, she also encourages Adam to join her. This upsets God and they are both cursed. God must then confront human defiance, and the first instance comes from a woman, the very creature created to congeal Eden’s perfection.
Seeing as how we are all God’s children, made in His image, it is important to understand the necessity to love and respect one another while glorifying Him in the process.
The Hebrew Bible, better known as the Old Testament, is a collection of tomes that form part of the Biblical canon. Many scholars around the world do not think that a single author wrote the books contained in the Hebrew Bible, but rather that it represents centuries of stories frequently compiled after the events they describe . The stories were created with visions for the future, in order to allow audiences insight into communities and beliefs that were common thought during their era. The stories responded to the issues and problems of their time, but also addressed contemporary climates. While the stories themselves may not be true, they convey truth without needing literal readings. For example, the creation stories in Genesis, portray God as creating the universe, and while this is considered as not ‘literally true’; the stories communicate theological truths about mankind’s relationship with God through the eyes of Hebrew writers .
A literature work will always portray an important message to their readers; in the case of the Bible would be its teaching values. Since there are different interpretations of messages that readers can conclude from reading the Bible; the professor William H. Bishop portrays on his article “The Genesis of Values in Genesis” the interpretation according with the Christians, “The Christian worldview is predicated upon biblical teaching and interpretation. It is the foundation for family values. These values are prevalent in the Book of Genesis and are what comprise the family unit, the decline of which is eroding the values given by God”(Bishop,2015). According with the professor, the Christians see the Genesis book as guide to learn the values of a family which is the message of this literature work piece .However, portraying a message is not what Literature is all about. Literature is a written work that would produce some type of effect on the readers. Not all relationships are necessarily good by God’s eyes. Relationships can cause one person go down the wrong path in life. For example, “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and at it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it." (Genesis 3.6). The relationship between the wife and husband allowed the husband to trust his wife; he ate the food due to the fact she ate it and believed it was okay to eat. The book of genesis can be considered a myth but not in the sense that it holds a false belief or idea. In the book of Genesis, it tells the creation story of how the world, creatures, and first humans came to be. It tells the story of how God created the heavens and the earth and eventually Adam and Eve. Later in Genesis, Eve was enticed by a serpent (The Devil), to eat from the tree God forbid them to. Following his mate, Adam did the same. God was upset but forgave them. Even though they were forgiven, he still punished them. He punished Eve by making childbirth painful and many other things. Throughout the world there are various cultures with varying religions and creation stories to explain the creation of the Earth and it’s inhabitants. Of these creation stories two with similar and also different characteristics is the Creation story in the book of Genesis which is a part of the 1st Testament in the Hebrew Bible and explains the creation of Earth and humans, and the Theogony which is the greek creation story that describes the origins of the Earth and the Greek Gods. After reading Genesis 3, it is evident that temptations play a significant role in our lives. Sometimes we choose to follow our desires and other times we decide to do what is right. When Eve is tempted by the serpent, or Satan, to take to fruit from the tree, one can see how easy it can be to fall to temptation. Satan had been very crafty in how he got Eve to take the fruit from the tree.
