In the United States, Fort McHenry stands tall in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. Fort McHenry has played a large role in American history ever since its construction was finished in the year 1800. The most prominent piece of history associated with Fort McHenry is when it was bombed in the year 1814. It was during the War of 1812, a war against Britain over the issue of Britain harassing America’s ships and sailors. America was doing poorly in the war until Fort McHenry was bombed. The bombing of Fort McHenry played a pivotal role in the War of 1812 because it was a turning point in the war, it instilled pride into the American people, and lives on to this day through the National Anthem of the United States. In 1812, on June 18th, The United States of America declared war on Great Britain. One of the reasons why was that British sailors were capturing American sailors and stealing their ships. This act called impressment would not be tolerated by the president, James Madison. “Regarding the impressment of American citizens-and Mr. Madison affirmed that thousands had been impressed-Mr. Madison admitted no possibility of compromise whatever.” British ships were invading American waters and attacking American ships, like in the incident between the Chesapeake and the Leopard. The American ship, the Chesapeake, was approached by the British ship, Leopard. When the Leopard approached the Chesapeake, it requested to search the ship for deserters. The Chesapeake denied the request, and when the messenger from the Leopard returned to the Leopard, the Leopard fired on the Chesapeake. The Chesapeake was unready for combat, and only managed to fire one shot at the Leopard. Three sailors died and 18 were wounded. The history of FT. McClellan, AL began in July of 1917-1999. It was located near Anniston, AL, which was the first and only military post in that vicinity. On July 1, 1929 Camp McClellan was formally changed to Fort McClellan, which became a permanent duty assignment for active Army. Fort McClellan was named after Major General George B. McClellan, who was the General in Chief of the Army from 1861-1862. It was the first southern military installation named in honor of a northerner general. McClellan was used as a mobilization camp where soldiers of WWII trained. During WWII, McClellan was considered one of the largest military installations, where roughly half a million troops were trained. From the time that the war ended, up until the day that the based closed, McClellan had an average of 10,000 military personnel on the installation (Transition Force, 2014).
The Northerners were warned about this ironclad “monster” and were waiting for this moment a long time. When the Merrimac came into view she fought the Cumberland and ended up destroying it. The shell burst into the rail and knocked down nine men of the Cumberland. In the end the Merrimac destroyed the Cumberland. But no ship in the navy ever fought as hard or as brave as the Cumberland did.
The British chose to attack the Americans from the north by way of Isle aux Pois in the mouth of the Pearl River because this was the only only stable water they had found that ships could ride and anchor. When hearing that the british where coming this way, Lieutenant Thomas Ap Catesby Jones and his five gunboats went to try and Barackade the Rigolets trying to make sure they wouldn’t enter. His 185 men and 23 guns awaited the British. At 10:30 on December 14th 1814 three columns of British ships, 42 to 45, armed with 43 guns and 1,200 under the command of Captain Lockyer met the American blockade. Fierce fighting began and the British had finally captured the five American boats. Losses were 17 British and 6 Americans killed, 77 British and 35 Americans wounded. This gave Gerneral Andrew Jackson six days more to improve his defenses. The British at the very beginning of the war had demolished almost all of Jacksons sea power. Jackson only had the Carolina, Louisiana, and one gunboat left.
...p;The bombardment had lasted thirty-six hours, and over 3,000 shot and shell had been hurled at the fort. The evacuation of the fort took place the following day on April 14, 1861. The fort had been evacuate, not surrendered. Before the evacuation the citizens of Taunton Mass. had voted Maj. Anderson an elegant sword. New York gave him the freedom of the city in a gold box. Finally, on June 6, 1861, the Chamber of Commerce of New York ordered the execution of a series of medals to be presented to Maj. Anderson and to each man of the garrison. Fort Donelson, Tennessee, guarding the Cumberland River, became the site of the first major Confederate defeat in the Civil War. Victory at Donelson started Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant on his road to Appomattox and the White House. His cool judgment under pressure saved the day after the Confederates threatened to break his troop lines, yet errors by his opponents handed him a victory that he did not fully earn on his own.
On June, 17th 1775 began a fight between the British and the Americans, it took place on Breed’s HIll. In Charlestown Peninsula, North side of Boston Harbor, this battle was the bloodest of the Revoltionary in America. The British Commander, Lieutenant General Thomas Gage, Major General William Howe. There were about 2,400 troops being lead by Major general Howe.
As a country, the United States felt that the War of 1812 was under control and that they were well prepared for any battle any army could throw at them. After the United States won an important battle on Lake Erie in 1813, the American commander, Oliver Hazard Perry, sent the message "We have met the enemy and they are ours." As a new country, America, having just defeated the greatest military strength on the earth, was perhaps overconfident. However, once Great Britain turned all of its attention to defeating the United States, America realized that the fate of her country relied on Baltimore, and Baltimore relied on the protection of Fort McHenry. If Fort McHenry was taken over by the British, the Nation would have been split into two. The fate of the United States rested, to a large extent, on the success or failure of the central prong attack which was being protected by Fort McHenry. If Baltimore had not had Fort McHenry for protection, the city would have been an easy target and our nation would have perished because Baltimore would have lacked the proper protection it needed to prevail.
Fort Pillow is called a massacre because federal african-americans were shot and killed by the confederates attempting to surrender. Fort pillow is located North of Memphis and was built by Brigadier general Gideon Johnson Pillow in 1862. Scientists have always made predictions about climate change causing major disasters around the world. Florida is one of the areas being affected by climate change at this exact moment. It is experiencing a huge amount of severe flooding throughout the whole the state, but especially near the coast. The climate change is affecting the sea level in Florida to rise higher than it was before. Even with the flooding and sea level rising being a major issues in Florida, state officials are not taking any type of action because they fear that if they do, they will show that they can’t control it or find a solution. On June 1st, 1812, President James Madison declared war on the British for many reasons. In his war message, Madison brought three unpardonable British acts to Congress’s attention. The first, impressment. “Thousands of American citizens, under the safeguard of public law and of their national flag, have been torn from their country and from everything dear to them,” (War Message to Congress, Paragraph 4). British Navy ships would stop American ships to search for British deserters. This often resulted in natural American citizens being apprehended and forced into the British navy. During this time, Britain was at war with Napoleon and wanted to hurt France economically. On June 1, 1812, Madison asked Congress to declare war. The war was influenced by a group of people known as the “War Hawks.” The group included Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun. They believed that Madison should have taken a more militant policy towards Great Britain, instead of proclaiming non-intercourse towards them because of trading issues. Madison kept in mind their suggestion and when the British impressed American seamen and took over their ships, Madison gave into the pressure and declared war. This began the War of 1812.The youthful nation definitely was not prepared for the fight.

When Britain kept seizing American merchant ships to abduct and force the sailors to help fight in their war, James Madison saw this as unacceptable.
