The body and the mind are seen as the two driving points in the development of a self. The “body” in the development of the self refers to the physiological body that is conscious and can make decisions. This part of the self is the physical self, and it experiences everything in the physical world. The “mind” is the area of the self that takes the information that is presented to it by the body, analyzes it, and reacts and changes the self accordingly. They both act in unison, but the mind cannot exist without the body, because the body is how the mind receives its information. One way this is seen is through the increase in internet usage and the decrease in television usage. In many countries over the past decade, “the average number of time spent online has increased.” Subsequently, there is a “reduction in television viewing time” as well in households in the countries that reported an increase in an average increase in internet usage (Lilley, 32). The reason why this is important in the relationship between the body and the self is that when you remove the body from other people, the self begins to deteriorate. People who are heavy internet users being to ignore everything that could have been important to them such as school, work, family, and friends. A study from South Korea, “a leader in broadband access,” shows that online gambling can result in a perceived “decline in family time, and family communication” (Lilley, 32). These people lose their bodies in the online world, and with that loss of the body, they also lose their self. This loss of self creates a division between these users and their significant others in their lives. Now, this is not to say this is the only online activity that can decrease time with important significant others in our lives. This study just proves that there is this problem, and it is highly perceived with online gambling, but there could be many other social websites where this takes effect. This loss of self is completely based off of their loss of body to the online world. Another strong area of online use is gaming, more specifically Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or MMORPG. At some of the higher levels, players reported “playing over 70 h per week,” which can be absolutely detrimental to their self, health, and overall perception of life (Lilley, 32).
