Throughout the semester in our sociology class we have learned about many different things. Of these things the concepts that have caught my attention have been racial differences, gender inequalities, and the culture and traditions of a specific group of people. All of these concepts are important to the way we as human beings live in our everyday lives. I was fortunate enough to be able to go see two presentations that revolved around these topics. The first one I went to was Elena Diaz presentation, and the second one I went to was the black women writers. Elena Diaz, a doctorate from the University of Havana, was a very intelligent person. Today’s Jamaican people were originally brought over from modern day Nigeria and Ghana. The main location where they were being embarked from was Cape Castle from the gold coast of Ghana and the Bight of Afra from Nigeria. He exclaimed to us how since the beginning of times women were considered to be more important than men in the African culture. African women from the Ashanti empire brought many specific traditions from their former homes in Ghana to their new homes in Jamaica. The Ashanti women centralized in child caring and power in the economic world for making sure work was being carried out. Another unique tradition of the Ashanti people was that they had the ideology of an extended family. This meant that your brother’s wife would act like your wife as well while she was in your presence. In today’s world women are usually given gender roles that consist of cleaning the house, cooking, and taking care of the children. Women in the Jamaica were on the other hand proving this point completely false. These women from Jamaica were utterly in charge of the economic life in their homes instead of the men. When the British invaded the island of Jamaica in 1655 they began to take advantage of the women because they saw them as the backbone of the industrial workforce.
