Ken Hamblin is the author of “The Black Avenger.” He has worked in various media fields and continues to work as a talk radio host and has a talk show of his own. He also refers to himself as a thinking black man (384-385). Hamblin seems to believe that hard work is the only way to be successful. Hamblin writes an effective work that portrays ethos by using his racial credibility, pathos to invoke emotions, and logos by cause and effect. First off, Hamblin uses ethos to refute the idea of the Hobbled Black by shattering the myth because he is a successful African American. Hamblin had not planned on riding his motorcycle, he also did not plan on what was about to become of his trip. Hamblin wore all black leather and a black helmet when he was rode his motorcycle to Fort Collins and the crowd thought he looked like Darth Vader, which later became the Black Avenger (387). Hamblin adopts Superman’s slogan being “Truth, justice, and the American way,” added the word honey at the end after another African American caller tried to say that these values were not offered to African American people. He even tried to imply that Hamblin was acting white (387). He uses it to psych out the self-righteous African Americans that believe in the idea of the Hobbled Black. There are a substantial amount of Americans today that believe that the United States is the land of equal opportunity, even for African Americans. The poorest people in the U.S. are still better off than many people in third world countries that work for close to nothing. Furthermore, Hamblin uses logos to create a cause and effect. Hamblin says, “As a result of my appearance on C-Span, I received nearly 8,000 pieces of mail, more than 5,000 of them requesting the Certificate of Absolution” (387). Because he appeared on TV, Hamblin had a dramatic increase in followers and fans that wanted to purchase the certificate.
