Pablo Neruda
Pablo Neruda was a poet who used his work to educate people on what life was really about, and that choice made him a controversial figure in South America. Like every author he did face criticism, but his wasn’t negative. He was a great political figure, and many people looked up to him for wisdom.
BIOGRAPHY
Nefali Ricardo Reyes Bausualto was born on July 12, 1904 in Parral, Chile. Less than a month after his birth, his mother Rosa lost her long battle with Tuberculosis and died. From early childhood, it seemed that Neruda was destined to be a poet (UXL Biographies). His father didn’t approve of his poetic interests, so he created a pen name that he would go by and he chose the name Pablo Neruda (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Neruda wasn’t just a poet, he had many other jobs as he went along with his life. He was a political creature, and he was loved by many. Neruda was once nominated as president of his homeland (Carol). When Neruda was 23 he was finally recognized as a poet, and because of that the Chilean government gave him a post in the consular service in the far east. With his job he lived in many places. He lived in Burume, Siam, China, Japan and India. Throughout his travels it was considered a great time of isolation and loneliness for the author. During these times of loneliness he began to write, and that created the book Residencia en Le Tierra, this was a book of at least fifty poems. During this time Neruda was offered a generous job. He was asked to be Senator. Neruda’s major job was to rescue as many Chileans as possible, because Spain was in the midst of a civil war (UXL Biblographies). He received his law degree in 1923, moved to Paris and wrote his first, well-known work, Leyendas de Guatemala, which tells about the Maya culture and life before Spanish rule. When he returned to Guatemala, he edited a radio magazine and began to write poems, specifically sonnets. He also wrote in many countries in Central and South America while traveling. 1966 to 1070 he served as the Guatemalan diplomat to Paris, where he decided to live permanently. He died on June 9, 1974 in Madrid, Spain.

His most favorite thing while writing books and essays and poetry was using words to force his readers to rethink their own lives and obstacles creatively. He always spent his life rethinking his past and future actions, thoughts, asking questions to get a better understanding of concepts. He loved to look to nature for greater intensity and meaning for his life.

Paragraph 2 says, “Father knew many people in Santiago, and Neftali could not take the chance that Father would discover he was disobeying him. Besides that, he could not stop thinking about what Father had said - that he was an embarrassment to the family.” He suppressed his dream, trying to hide it from his Father, until one day, he started reading a poetry book. He read about a character named Paolo, and said the name aloud. It didn’t feel right to him, so he translated it into Spanish, getting Pablo. At that point, he made a decision. He would use the name Pablo Neruda as a pseudonym so that his Father wouldn’t know that it was actually Neftali. The next day, Neftali left his home, so that he could go somewhere where he could write freely. On his birthday in July of 1954, Pablo Neruda confessed to the University of Chile that "it is worthwhile to have struggled and sung, it is worthwhile to have lived because I have loved" (Neruda 331). In nearly all of his works, Neruda attests to the simplicity, valor, and importance of love, whether for country, "common things," or another human being. Throughout South America, he was known as "un poeta del pueblo," a poet of the people, and his talent for composing such passionate verses propelled him to Nobel Laureate status. In a collection published in 1972, he exemplifies his mastery of language by entwining his own passionate love life with an admiration for nature, producing realistic, yet mystical expressions of devotion. In "The Fickle One," the author creates a paradox confirming that the persona’s sincere affection transcends the physical attraction and lust by which he initially appears imprisoned. Furthermore, Neruda presents an opposition by dividing the poem into parallel halves, demanding that even the receptive reader peruse the poem more than once to discern the genuine meaning of the experience that the text conveys.
Pablo Picasso is one of the most recognized and popular artists of all time. In Pablo’s paintings and other works of art, he would paint what he was passionate about and you can see his emotions take control throughout his paintings and other works of art. Pablo Neruda is from Chile and gives a voice to Latin America in his poetry (Bleiker 1129). “The United Fruit Co.,” the poem by Pablo Neruda that will be analyzed in this essay, is enriched with symbolism, metaphors, and allusions. These allusions have great emphasis to the Christian religion, but some allusions are used to evoke negative emotions towards the United States (Fernandez 1; Hawkins 42). Personification and imagery along with onomatopoeia and metonymy are also found in “The United Fruit Co.” Neruda’s use of these literary devices makes his messages of imperialism, Marxism, and consumerism understandable (Fernandez 4). In this essay each of these literary devices with its proper meaning will be further analyzed in the hope of achieving a more complex understanding of Neruda’s message.
Through his poem “Don’t Go Far Off,” which was originally written in Spanish, Pablo Neruda illustrates his message that love can take over and control life as he expresses his emotions and thoughts of misery and depression. By detailing the days, hours and seconds, comparing his behavior to typical situations, and repeating specific phrases and words related to suffering and confusion, Pablo Neruda strengthens each of his four stanzas as well as the emotion and theme of his poem.
In the poem “A song of Despair” Pablo Neruda chronicles the reminiscence of a love between two characters, with the perspective of the speaker being shown in which the changes in their relationship from once fruitful to a now broken and finished past was shown. From this Neruda attempts to showcase the significance of contrasting imagery to demonstrate the Speaker’s various emotions felt throughout experience. This contrasting imagery specifically develops the reader’s understanding of abandonment, sadness, change, and memory. The significant features Neruda uses to accomplish this include: similes, nautical imagery, floral imagery, and apostrophe.
