Public Influences
Being human it comes naturally to be concerned about what others think. Often people find themselves wondering how someone will react to a decision made. What-if’s from other people are one of the most influential reasons a decision is made. This is a difficult world, one that pushes law enforcement to do things without the right intentions. Decisions get made on surroundings, sometimes with little to no thought process. Poor decisions in a working environment are an effect of people constantly feeling judged. Rather than standing out and making the right decision, police officers often follow what others think they should do. In this essay, I will argue that the police officer was easily influenced by a community to make

Once the officer started talking with the public about the incident, this started to make an effect on his judgment. “Various Burmans stopped me on the way and told me about the elephant’s doings” (Orwell 621.) Without taking the time to think the officer was compiling information on the elephant without actually witnessing any of the doings. Therefore, this was becoming an impact on his decision without him realizing it. The officer had been tasked to inspect the issue of an escaped elephant, not speak with the public about the incident. As a role model, keep from being publicly influenced; the officer should not have said what he was doing or where he was going. This would have helped eliminate any beginnings to public influence. When the officer did question the Burmese, he stated, “as usual, failed to get any definite information.” (Orwell 621.) This only confirms that any information provided is nothing but …show more content…
“The people said that the elephant had come suddenly upon him round the corner of the hut, caught him with its trunk, put its foot on his back and ground him into the earth” (Orwell 621.) This makes it sound like the elephant was out to murder the man. Of course the elephant ground the man into the earth; the Burmans are telling the story out of fear, they just witnessed a man die. Any story has details added to it as someone may remember, but that doesn’t make the story factual. The only thing that can be known is that a person is dead because of the elephant. Animals have a fight or flight process; the officer doesn’t know if the elephant attacked out of fear and fought back because it was provoked or if the man was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. When the officer heard of the doings by the elephant, its best to understand that the elephant is an animal, it has no sense of right or wrong, it protects or it flees. The officer as stated previously is ill educated but did understand that the elephant was chained, therefore, the officer needed to understand the elephant sought freedom and just wanted to get away. When speaking with the public, the officer should have kept to information that would simply lead him to the elephant, not impact a judgment on the elephant that it was violent based on stories
It is true that police officers have absolute control over their own integrity and professionalism; however, a portion of the responsibility lies with the police administration. The “six pillars” of character are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, justice/fairness, caring, and civic virtues/citizenship which is the type of character a police officer should ultimately possess to properly perform the honorable profession of law enforcement. As my research has revealed, that is not always the
Police Corruption in America The police officer stands at the top of the criminal justice system in a nation where crime rates are high and where the demands for illegal goods and services are widespread. These conditions create a situation in which the police officer is confronted with opportunity to accept a large number of favors or grants. Police corruption occurs in many forms and observers of police behavior agree that it falls into nine specific areas. Drug related police corruption
peace officers are committed to the profession they chose. They view the career as a calling, a dedication to perform a public service to their community. Being a police officer requires one to continually strive for perfection, but there is no such thing as a perfect cop. What makes a good cop turn bad? Many factors can attribute to police corruption, but the question that should be asked is if it can be stopped. Although police agencies have progressed greatly from its beginning, police corruption
Ideologies are to blame Secondly, dominant ideologies in the media represent criminals as demoralized and dangerous individuals while, on the other hand, police officers are depicted as “honest and heroic public servants” (Hirschfield and Simon 2010: 155). In turn, these forms of ideologies lead to individuals blaming the victims for their experienced abuse. In addition, according to William Ryan (1976: 3) the formula for blaming the victim is, “justifying inequality by finding defects in the victims
Ethics is fundamental in law enforcement and that is why it is of the upmost importance to find a qualified candidate who is ethical during the hiring process. “Sound conduct by police improves community interactions, enhances communication, and promotes shared responsibility for addressing crime and disorder” (COPS, 2017). Law enforcement is in a class of its own when it comes to being held to a higher standard than any other profession. There is an expectation placed on law enforcement personnel
The degree of force that officers use is heavily influenced by police discretion in real-world situations rather than espoused by a certain agenda. Discretion can be classified into four different categories where administrators, the community, and the individual police officer exercise differing degrees of influence in decision-making. What is needed to help officer discretion is a central ethos that will guide discretion when all other rules fail to help. Normal force is distinct from legal
Police Corruption in America The missions statement of police agencies usually highlight with pride the maintenance, promotion, and protection of peace, order, safety, and justified law enforcement in communities and the entire nation. Police officers are agents meant to bust crimes and get the bad guys. ) Why do police officer perceive themselves as true outsiders, especially after many years on the job? There of plenty of reasons why officers perceive themselves as true outsiders. One main factor has to do it the experience and perception of danger in these communities. Senior officers create memories of their experiences after a few years of duty that leaves a psychological scar that stick with them forever. This is the main reason they refer to themselves as true outsiders from the community
The police are required to enforce the law, maintain order, and provide community service. Given each of these factors, law enforcement needs community trust and cooperation of the public to be truly successful. If trust and respect for the police are gained through good public relations, citizens are more likely to be responsive to police efforts. While many officers are there to be a positive role model, there are always going to be a few bad apples affecting the public relations component. Sadly
life moreover in policing. Police discretion is a constant consideration within the law enforcement. Many people are of the view that police discretion is both an essential part of policing as well as a constant source of issues. There has been a constant quandary between enforcing the law to the latter. Police officers are faced with a vast array of situations each day which they must deal with, in which no two circumstances they encounter are the same. Moreover officers are frequently placed in the
different views of police culture can vary in many different situations. I say this because of the many different views this can be misleading at times. I think what's needed is reform of a police culture that has often infected relations between police and blacks, destabilized respect for cops and the law, and set the basis for the many deaths. The overall image of the police offers is an overview of the public’s perception of the police in reality. Without the public’s view of this police culture wouldn’t
Police misconduct encompasses illegal actions or the violation of individuals’ rights by police officers in the conduct of their duties. A wrongful conviction of a citizen can result from police misconduct of only one officer. They are expected to exceed the standard and follow the agency’s operating policy when it comes to professional conduct. Likewise, if they violate the trust of their office, they should receive a harsher punishment than a normal citizen. The formal law enforcement code of
Law enforcement officers do not only se laws when it comes to making decisions. They also se police discretion when it comes to doing their jobs. To understand police discretion, we have to understand what it is, how and why it is used, and what factors influence it. Though upholding the law is an essential part of being a police officer, there is also a human aspect that must be taken into account. The law alone is not the only resource police officers use when doing their jobs. First, to know
