Mahandas Karam Chandra Ghandi and Adolf Hitler, were both men who changed history through strong character; their outlook on humanity, very different. While one fought against the British, the other fought against forces he was sure would ruin his people. Both men inspired people to become followers through their hypnotic speeches in short amounts of time. While similarities were certainly present in these powerful leaders, their means to attain their goals, were quite opposite; one led by love and nonviolence, the other, guided by hatred and the use of force. He captivated crowds with powerful speeches filled with a sense of purpose for a nation and rallied an entire nation behind him. He utilized constant propaganda to rally support and serve his cause. Confidence was present and people were drawn to aid in his cause just be the sense of purpose he displayed. Hitler once said, “I do not see why man should not be as cruel as nature” and to this quote, he lived true, carrying out horrific acts against the Jews, ending the lives of millions, all with the backing of his followers. While Ghandi was able to accomplish goals and influence people through passive means, Hitler utilized harsh tactics and control. One fought ultimately for the betterment of people, while the other sought to accomplish his own political and social visions. When studying these two individuals, it is difficult to fathom how they could both be named as “Man of the Year,” however, it is clear that both were successful in many of their pursuits and both, without a doubt, influenced vast numbers of people. Either leader could influence leaders of the future, for their successes were evident and therefor, could be influential for one to decide to pursue their own agenda through Gahndi’s peaceful boycotts or through the radical, deathly ways propelled by Adolf
