During contemporary times, many people encompass a fear of the little things, particularly pests: bugs, weeds, and other invaders. In order to thwart these fears, people invite pesticides to combat the environmental annoyances. Both homes and farms confront distributed pesticides, and societies often neglect to examine the larger effect of pesticides within an area. The human desire to create a clean, stringent, and functional utopia fuels the usage of pesticides; people often destroy any blemishes or imperfections within their world. Regulation exists on the usage of pesticides, yet people often abuse the set boundaries. Naysayers often present the need for pesticides in order to sustain maximum food rations, and believe they do not present a true harm to the environment. Communities do not always receive full disclosure of the impact of pesticides. Strict regulation within the world of pesticides presents the capability to benefit the nation as a whole when examining the state of the people and the environment.
Members of society often naively support the usage of pesticides, and the lenient governing produces unforeseen detriments to society’s health. Scientific research proves pesticides to encompass harmful effects to people and their health; they have been proven to cause a plethora of diseases, including the neurological condition Parkinson’s (Source A). Parkinson’s impairs the part of the brain that controls movement, and pesticides directly target the brain (Source A). Source A states Parkinson’s disease was the “latest edition” to the ever-growing multitude of diseases linked to pesticide exposure. With stricter governing, those with access to pesticides present a smaller threat to the fragile biosphere. Current regulation often fails to limit or restrict the use of pesticides; they are allowed to be sprayed over waters, and in national forests (Source G). The lax regulation ultimately threatens the necessary and unnecessary creatures present in the environment, “‘pesticides are intended to kill living organisms, something that most would consider an adverse effect on the environment’” (Source G). Pesticides feed into the game of consumerism- people blindly feed into a little game. Without harsh government intervention, those who use pesticides will not understand the full extent to their actions.
Anthrax is one of the most preferred biological warfare agents for many highly identified reasons. First, anthrax is extremely lethal. Anthrax can contain up to 100 million lethal doses in just one gram of anthrax spores, which is 100,000 times more lethal than any other biological warfare agent. It is also known that inhalation anthrax is almost always fatal if the symptoms are allowed to progress without any treatment. Anthrax is also the silent and invisible killer. On top of the fatality rate of anthrax, there are also very low barriers to produce the biological weapon. Anthrax spores are very easy to produce in large quantities, and the process of production is very inexpensive. Also, there is plenty of available information on how to weaponize anthrax and not a whole lot of technology is needed to be able to produce anthrax. Anthrax is also easy to weaponize because it is extremely stable as a dry powder in the form of spores. These spores can live for decades and still be very lethal to the human body. Anthrax can be put into an aerosol form disseminated into a spray can, and it can also be freeze-dried into a bomb. Presently anthrax is the most preferred biological agent is because we have no accurate detection capability.
Rachel Carson’s use of the of the term ‘biocides’ signifies the whole rhetoric of her book. These so-called pesticides and herbicides are not merely killing herbs and insects as their names suggest, but rather they are committing murder against the whole biological spectrum on earth. We should call them as they are, biocides. Biocides that are harming each and every single living creature on this planet of ours, leading to their elimination. From humans and mammals, reptiles, fish and amphibians, to the tiny ants and bees, we are all being killed slowly on different rates. Marine Biologist, Rachel Carson, in her environmental sciences book, The Silent Spring, documents the detrimental effects on the environment by the indiscriminate use of pesticides. They make it a priority to get their points across that limiting pesticides and chemical compounds will help make America, and other places around the world a better place. Humans and the government cause this through authorization of plenty of the events going on in the environment. This novel is thought by many to be a revolutionary novel that forced people to take notice of the harm being caused in their world, many of which people were unaware of. After discovering the results of these chemicals, it really makes one wonder, is the luxury of being insect free really worth all of the consequences?
Smallpox is a highly infectious and fatal disease caused by the Variola virus. It causes extremely painful pustules to sprout across the entire body. Spread from human to human, it has since been eradicated from the world through the efforts of the World Health Organization. However, there is a distinct possibility that it may be reintroduced through bioterrorism. Biological weapons may cause another pandemic to erupt across the world and kill millions of individuals. Through constant vigilance and careful planning, mankind can prevent this scenario.

As time has progressed, there has always been an overarching need for high amounts of crop production throughout the world. With the rapid rate of population growth, the need for crops and other sources of nutrients is only increasing. In order to meet these high demands and increase yields, farmers and other agriculturalists have started implementing the use of pesticides. These chemical mixtures are being used in order to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate any pests from destroying growing crops. However, using pesticides on crops can create massive amounts of pollution, negatively affect an individual’s health, and can spark biodiversity loss within an ecosystem. According to Michael C.R. Alavanja, “Over 1 billion pounds of pesticides are used within the United States (US) each year and approximately 5.6 billion pounds are used worldwide”. I remember when I first thought about the power one person could have to create change. I was a teenager growing up in the South when I read Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring”. This beautifully written book is a powerful indictment of the widespread use of pesticides. Rachel Carson criticized the chemical companies for claiming that pesticides were safe despite mounting evidence to the contrary. And she criticized public officials who accepted the chemical industry’s claims.
"1 Matthiessen goes on to write that "one shudders to imagine how much more impoverished our habitat would be had Silent Spring not sounded the alarm. " 2 This is indeed a worthy claim by Mr. Matthiessen, but he correctly uncovers a bigger and more alarming truth when he says, "the damage being done by poison chemicals today is far worse than it was when she wrote the book. 3 In fact, since 1962, pesticide use in the US has doubled. As an environmentalist (or a "radical" environmentalist, as I am often labeled by members of the mainstream environmental movement), I feel it is my duty as a protector of the Earth's well-being to write this editorial as a means of bringing into the American consciousness a variety of frightening environmental issues.
Pesticides are contaminating the Earth’s water supplies. There are seventeen pesticides found in twenty-three state’s water supplies right now. Scientists at Cornell University conclude that 99% of pesticides miss the intended source and find their way into the water, air and soil. Most of the pollution isn’t strong enough to create an immediate impact on humans so the wildlife is the primary target to these contaminates. Animals such as the European Starling birds are constantly being tested and found that they are greatly affected both behaviorally and psychologically.
