In the past years, schools have implemented bilingual education programs because they want students to become biliteracy. Biliteracy is the ability to read and write proficiently in two languages. A biliterate is a person who is proficient in two different languages. In order to achieve biliteracy, students need consistent and strategic reading and writing instruction in both their native language and English. Teachers play a big role in the development of child become biliteracy. Bilingual teacher should be prepared to teach biliteracy effectively, especially in the early school years when student are learning to write and read. That is one of the main reasons that many schools follow the bilingual model of 90% native language and 10% English classroom instruction. They increase the percentage in English and decrease the percentage in native language, depending in the grade level. The process of becoming biliteracy is different for every student, as a teacher we need to support no matter if we are biliterate or not. There are strategies that will help us to the development of bilitercy. Also we need to educate parents about the process and how can benefit their children. In the future I would like to see more states that recognize students that are biliteracy, the board of education need to learn that we live in a country of immigration that we have students from all parts of the word and they speak different language and have students that are recognize as biliteracy is a benefit for all. Been biliteracy is not negative, is a gift.
