English is an interesting language. English is comprised of many different words from different languages all mashed up and mixed together. English is a very hard language to learn, especially if you can’t hear it. How easy would it be to confuse a “B” with a “P”, they sound similar and when trying to lip read how can you tell the difference? I feel that young Deaf /hard of hearing students being taught by a Deaf teacher or a child of a Deaf adult (C.O.D.A) teacher is very important because ASL is the first step to learning English and becoming bilingual. According to the article Why Schools for Deaf Children Should Hire Deaf Teachers: A Preschool Issue By Courtney Shantie and Robert Hoffmeister, the authors state “This paper will focus on the theories and facts behind why bilingual education for Deaf children is the best option” (Shantie and Hoffmeister, 2003). I feel that the topic of a Deaf/hard of hearing student being taught by a Deaf/C.O.D.A teacher is important because it is the best possible chance you can give that student to learn. ASL is most likely the students first language. I know if I had a Deaf child I would want them to be taught by a Deaf/C.O.D.A teacher because it is the best possible opportunity I could give my child to succeed in life.
In the article Why Schools for Deaf Children Should Hire Deaf Teachers: A Preschool Issue By Courtney Shantie and Robert Hoffmeister, the authors discuss why Deaf students’ teachers should be a C.O.D.A or be Deaf. A C.O.D.A or child of a Deaf adult is someone who grew up with one or both parents being Deaf and is a hearing person. In the article, by Shantie and Hoffmeister, there is no rebuttal stated. Also, the thesis from Shantie and Hoffmeister is mostly implied yet ...

This critical period is important because if students fall behind, how will the rest of their schooling go?
In the article Why Schools for Deaf Children Should Hire Deaf Teachers: A Preschool Issue By Courtney Shantie and Robert Hoffmeister many good points are made. From the point that ASL would help Deaf/Hard of hearing students learn English better. To the point, Deaf students should be taught by Deaf/C.O.D.A teachers because good language models help Deaf students learn better. To the point also, early learning is crucial. “ It is imperative that more discussion and training in ASL proficiency be required of educators of the Deaf and those training to become educators.” (Shantie and Hoffmeister, 2003).
