Big Creek People in Action, Inc. (BCPIA) was founded in 1990 to address economic problems facing McDowell County in West Virginia after the economy of the county started to fail when coal production declined (Big Creek People In Action, Inc., 2012). The agency is a nonprofit 501(C)(3) organization offering a community center where festivals and community events are held and a place of learning that offers GED programs and other educational programs.
Big Creek People In Action, Inc.’s mission statement is to serve “the community of McDowell County in the realms of education and literacy, leadership development, volunteer service, service learning, arts and culture, housing, recreation, and collaborative partnerships (Big Creek People In Action, Inc., 2012, ¶1). The location of the organization is Caretta, West Virginia, sitting at the intersection of three roads between several mountains. In the early morning, the sun shines down on the building, a former school that is called the Caretta Community Center. Here, people take fitness classes such as Zumba, classes to prepare to take the GED, send their children for after school care, and apply for assistance programs like the ones that make home repairs. Although the loss of coal, and lack of other industries has left a severe lack of jobs in the community the center also offers job search training, resume preparation, and some job training programs (Big Creek People In Action, Inc., 2012, ¶1-45). Location and Background The early English traders gave the Creek native Americans their name because they usually built their villages on or near creeks or rivers. If they were to still have their villages it would include areas of Northern Florida and Eastern Louisiana and Southern Tennessee.
Employee behaviors –Employees are actively involved in the community with reading programs, scholarship programs, and raising money for children’s hospitals. The employees are loyal. All managers are hired from within so they really know the business.

By the side of the Elk River in Charleston West Virginia lies a community within a community. This is not your ordinary idea topic when you come to think of a community beside a river. It’s not a community of birds, or snakes, but of people. "We're not animals," said Ronald McKeever. "We are just people that are down on our luck." These people have made tents their homes, and tarps the roof over their head and none of have a permanent home. In the summer the river bank next to Spring Street Bridge was home to about twenty five homeless people (Molenda). Only between six and eight people reside there now (Molenda). Some of those people are just like one time comers, just passing through Charleston, but out of the four remaining from the summer, two are on their way to having apartments (Molenda). “Basically, the other people that have been staying down there really just haven’t wanted assistance with housing,” Strickland verbalized.
