Several key factors have been associated with obesity:
Genetics: This has not yet been proven beyond a reasonable doubt, but researchers believe they have found a gene that is responsible for obesity.
Diet: One of the most important factors. Diet involves the type of food, how much food is eaten, how often food is eaten and the macro-nutrient ratios of the food consumed.
Physical Activity Level: This is also a highly important factor, weighing in (no pun intended) just behind diet in order of importance. Raising activity levels can help increase the metabolism and balance some of the hormone levels when not taken to extremes (less than 2 hours per day).
Metabolism: Metabolism is the rate at which calories are burned doing different activities (including rest), it can be affected by the diet, activity levels, overall health as well as certain medications.

Other Diseases: See chapter 5, many diseases affect the body’s ability to digest and assimilate food properly, leading to excess fat storage.
Emotions: A big component of the problem, can lead to lethargy (inactivity) and overeating, poor self-esteem and a seemingly endless cycle of despair and indifference.
Ethnic background/ cultural behaviors: Cultural and religious traditions often revolve around food and studies have shown that people eat up to 40% more than normal in a social setting. An example of this is that most people claim to gain weight during the holidays.
Economic Status: Lack of financial resources often leads to buying inexpensive, “nutritionally challenged” (a newly coined politically correct term for food that is BAD for you!) foods.

Metabolism factors affect obesity. They way one’s body might use energy is very diverse amongst humans. The weight one gain depends on one’s hormones and metabolisms and these factors are different in every person. The hormone that controls an individual’s hunger is called ghrelin. Gherlin stimulates hunger and bestows a feeling of satiety. Based on how an individual’s body is programmed, regulating one’s eating habits will help normalize one’s weight.
Obesity has increased rapidly throughout the years, especially in the United States. As of today, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of adults in the U.S are considered to be obese. We all know that obesity is becoming a serious issue in the lives Americans. The effects of obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and in serious cases, death. So the question we can all ask is, “What is the cause?” The cause of obesity can come from, but is not limited to, some of these things: eating habits, lack of exercise, or a medical condition.
It is said that an obesity epidemic is sweeping the country and that the numbers are astronomical. Approximately 31% of all adults and 15% of children, ages 6-19 are obese. Obesity is also severe in a variety of ethnic groups. For example, 50% of non-Hispanic black women are obese. Many researchers believe that the trend in obesity as a lot to do with cultural, economic, and environmental factors. Simply stated I think it can be attributed to genetics, portion size as well as food available and cost, and laziness.
For the past 10 years, obesity has become an epidemic. Not only adults are obese but children as well. The number of children with obesity keeps increasing each year. There are children being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems due to their obesity. Some experts are predicting that obesity will became the number one leading cause of premature death, instead of tobacco. There are many ways to prevent obesity in children and is up to the parent, to provide their children with healthier food options.
According to an elaborate study based on casual observation, there appears to be an association with stomach tightening and the presence of hunger; therefore, leading Walter Cannon to believe that stomach tightening is the source of hunger (Cannon & Washburn, 1912). What causes obesity? Overweight and obesity result from an energy imbalance. This involves eating too many calories and not getting enough physical activity. High calorie foods are more easily available today than ever before. Americans have also never had a less active lifestyle.
Although many individuals are uncertain about the increasing statistics associated with obesity, more than seventy percent of men and virtually sixty-two percent of women within the United States adult population are overweight or obese (Wilmore, Costill, & Kenney). Obesity refers to the condition of having an excessive amount of body fat. If an individual’s amount of body fat becomes too excessive, he/she is at a much greater risk of developing life-altering diseases such as heart failure, hypertension, type II diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, etc. (Wilmore, et al., 2008).

Some people are so quick to blame the fast food industry like McDonalds, Burger King, and other firms claiming that these industry aide in creating a society in which it is encouraged to eat unhealthy food. So who really is to blame? While we are busy pointing our sticky finger at restaurants, grocery stores, farmers, or government policies, we need to focus on our individual self as the main cause of this increasing epidemic.

Wheat makes up about 20% of a daily human diet. It is highly nutritious, providing fiber, energy, and oils which are a necessity for productivity and efficiency in this fast-paced world. What creates the problem is that about 95% of wheat is refined, and the healthiest parts, bran and germ, are removed, leaving unhealthy white flour. Though not interfering the brain directly, a person who is obese is eight times more likely to be unhappy about their body compared to people who are not obese. This could make life extremely difficult for people who have obesity due to the fact every time they look at themselves in the mirror there are reminded by their “none perfect self’s.” This can cause a person to lose all of their self-confidences. Causing that individual to become depress, and not get the medical help they need because of the fact they believe they will be stuck like that forever.
