Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys, is one of the most famous historical fiction books ever written. This 352 paged book has inspired many teens to acknowledge the Genocide of Baltic people. Ruta Sepetys was inspired to write a fiction book instead of a non-fiction book based on the stories she heard from survivors of the genocide during a visit to her relatives in Lithuania. She interviewed dozens of people during her stay. Between Shades of Gray was her first novel that she had written. This book was interpreted well enough by the readers to become a New York Times Bestseller. Lina Vilkas is a fifteen year old girl who is the protagonist of this story. She was taken, by the NKVD, from her house with her mother and brother to exile. Later in the story she meets Andrius and falls in love with him. She marries him after the war while moving from place to place. Andrius uses his misfortune as a fortune to help others. He takes care of Lina and her family as best he can. Nikolai Kretzsky is a young NKVD officer who helps Lina and her mother even after Lina insulted him. Mr Stalas is a Jew who is deported with the other people. He wanted to die with dignity. He is often referred to as The Bald Man. He confesses that he was liable for the deportation. Janina is a starry-eyed young girl who likes to help others and to talk to her "dead" doll. When few selected people are brought to the North Pole for more suffering, dozens of people die from cholera and pneumonia. Lina however, survives and manages to save Jonas and Janina with the help of Nikolai Kretzsky. Between Shades of Gray is based on these people and how they survived the suffering which makes the reader interested. The will to survive is strong in all the characters though there are some who seem to expect they will die at any time. Lina is furious with herself when she stooped low enough to accept food thrown at her by the guards, but she does it anyway. Even the youngest children realize the need to endure the torture and survive. Jonas finds a barrel and comprehends that it could be made into a stove. Janina finds a dead owl and realizes that it could be eaten. This will to survive sometimes results in anger and selfishness, as seen in Ulyushka when forced to share her shack with Lina’s family. This book should be read by everyone. Between Shades of Gray has a lot of themes that is useful for people in their lives. The style of writing would keep the reader interested and make the reader want to know what is going to happen next.
The fourth Chapter of Estella Blackburn’s non fiction novel Broken lives “A Fathers Influence”, exposes readers to Eric Edgar Cooke and John Button’s time of adolescence. The chapter juxtaposes the two main characters too provide the reader with character analyses so later they may make judgment on the verdict. The chapter includes accounts of the crimes and punishments that Cooke contended with from 1948 to 1958. Cooke’s psychiatric assessment that he received during one of his first convictions and his life after conviction, marring Sally Lavin. It also exposes John Button’s crime of truancy, and his move from the UK to Australia.
“A tan to die for” written by Claire Oliver is a letter to the editor that shows that the use of solariums can greatly increase the potential for life-threatening melanoma. Claire Oliver’s tone shows a composed, collected and complacent frame of mind at her imminent death, stating that “[she is] at peace”. Her composed tone when discussing the certainty of her impending death appeals to a sense of rationality, and writes optimistically about the remainder of her life. This optimism, and personal responsibility, comes from her wish of helping those who do not know of the health risks involved in the beauty young teens crave to acquire.
1. Jack Gladney: The narrator in the novel who lives in a town known as Blacksmith. Jack is the chairman of a department of Hitler studies at College-on-the-Hill. He “invented Hitler studies in North America in 1968” (4). Jack is married to Babette, his fourth wife. They live together with four children from previous marriages. Jack has another persona known as J.A.K. Gladney “to be taken seriously as a Hitler innovator” (16). As a professor of Hitler studies, Jack preserves a dignified image when wearing his “academic gown and dark glasses” (32). Jack like many Americans is bombarded by media and ideals of consumerism. He obsesses over his fear of death which is further influenced by the airborne toxic event. Jack is deeply in love with Babette and finds great comfort in their relationship.
For this assignment I chose to review the book Shades of Black by Sandra Pinkney and illustrated by Myles Pinkney. This book was published in January of 2006 by Cartwheel Books. This book teaches young children about the differences in culture, and how there is not one stereotype to being black. Black men and woman can be several shades, have several eye colors, ect., and still love their self. This book teaches children to recognize differences amongst other people, and not exclude them because they are different. This story is a great multicultural literature choice for children aged 3-10, pointing out physical challenges in an honest and positive way. This book gives very clear descriptions of ethnic customs and clothing throughout the book

The book was made by Leigh Bardugo who was born on Jerusalem, and she was pretty must raise in Los Angeles, believe or not it was actually her first novel she wrote after finishing college at Yale university. It all starts with our main protagonist Alina Starkov, who later discover the only thing she never know about herself, so choosing her own power Alina was giving a choice to save the world and save her love one from and the dark.
In the novel Under a Cruel Star, written by Heda Margolius Kovaly, a Jewish woman that lived in Prague, Czechoslovakia during Nazi and Soviet rule of her country, the author tells about her life of always living under terrible circumstances. Whether it was from being sent to the ghettos or Nazi concentration camps at a young age, or living under fear of terror during the Soviet Communist rule of Prague, she seems to always look for the glimmer of hope in all her experiences. “The little bird, the third force, kept me alive to tell the story” (5). In this text Mohanty argues that contemporary western feminist writing on Third World women contributes to the reproduction of colonial discourses where women in the South are represented as an undifferentiated “other”. Mohanty examines how liberal and socialist feminist scholarship use analytics strategies that creates an essentialist construction of the category woman, universalist assumptions of sexist oppression and how this contributes to the perpetuation of colonialist relations between the north and south(Mohanty 1991:55).
