This essay will consist of different sources that explain the inappropriate behaviour an emergency Nurse’s response at handover due to a male patient who has been admitted into the Emergency Department in a dishevelled state. As a Registered Nurse assigned to care for this patient when handing over the patient’s care to another Registered Nurse, the nurse responds in an inappropriate manner; stating, ‘I really hate looking after old people – they’re all senile and they smell’. This essay will analyse the attitudes of the nurse and the beliefs that support such comments are improper thus leaving a significant impact on the performance and the nursing care for this patient. A confused man presents into the Emergency Department in a dishevelled and unkempt state, the nurse assigned to this patient recognises the following; the man is in his mid-sixties, confused and disorientate, anxious, has an acetone breath odour, also at examination locates a haematoma on the right side of his forehead while the patient also states repeatedly that he wants to pass urine. As acknowledged previously the nurse responded in an inappropriate manner therefore making a significant impact on the care of this patient for the upcoming shift, the nurse presented signs of neglect thus actions need to be taken to keep the patient safe with the best suitable care possible. As the elderly population is increasing there are deficits in good basic care due to negative attitudes of some nursing staff around the world (Hanson, 2014). With neglect also rising and being more common with the elderly due to the inability for the elderly to do many things such as standing up to bullying; bullying can be categorized as either verbal or physical neglect (Help guide, 2... ... middle of paper ... ...us affecting her performance, the in charge nurse must be contacted. Failure to do so, the negative attitudes might also have a major impact on the quality of care for the elderly patient. As a nurse, stress can affect a person mentally, physically and emotionally, thus coming into both categories of physical and emotional health. The fact that the nurse may be going through emotional complication contributes in a huge factor to a nurse’s performance within the health care. If the nurse is unable to put aside her physical or emotional issues, it is important for the nurse to seek counselling, also it is important that the nurse takes a day of sick leave to sort her situation out. Inappropriate actions should always be reported to the in charge nurse to decrease chances of neglect and to be able to provide the best care possible for the patient whilst in hospital.
