The Bermuda Triangle is an area in the Atlantic Ocean often known for its mysterious disappearances and shipwrecks. It is a mythic al section of the Atlantic Ocean roughly marked by Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico, where dozens of ships and airplanes have disappeared. Unexplained circumstances surround some of these accidents and disappearances, although many different theories have been proposed regarding the Bermuda Triangle, none of them prove that mysterious disappearances occur more frequently there than in other busy and well-travelled sections of the ocean. In fact, people navigate the area every day without any accident.

William Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest,” which some scholars claim was based on a real-life Bermuda shipwreck, may have contributed to the increased interest and mystery in the area. It became extremely famous when the U.S.S. Cyclops disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. The ship never sent out a distress call and no-one on board answered radio calls from other ships. Also, there were no strong cyclones or storms in the area when the ship disappeared. The British brig Dei Gratia was about 400 miles east of the Azores on December 5, 1872, when crew members spotted a ship adrift in the dangerous seas. Capt. David Morehouse was taken aback to discover that the lonely vessel was the Mary Celeste, which had left New York City eight days before him and should have already arrived in Genoa, Italy. He changed course to offer help.

Morehouse sent a boarding party to the ship. Below the decks, the ship’s charts had been tossed about, and the crewmen’s belongings were still in their quarters. The ship’s only lifeboat was missing. Three and a half feet of water was splattering in the ship’s bottom, though the cargo of industrial alcohol was still mostly there.
