Beowulf an Epic Hero
An epic hero according to Anglo-Saxon literature is a hero who is larger-than-life; someone with self-confidence, great strength, and the qualities of loyalty, bravery, and honor. Beowulf can be considered an epic hero for multiple reasons throughout “Beowulf.” Beowulf is a character constructed on all of the Anglo-Saxon epic hero qualifications. For starters, Beowulf is seen as a noble character, that is willing to provide security for the people by risking his own life. As a character, Beowulf conducts superhuman strength, and can complete impossible tasks. These are only some among many other reasons and characteristics that Beowulf can be classified as an epic hero.
The story of “Beowulf” begins at a time where a great hero is needed. This is where Beowulf’s character takes the initial place of an epic hero. In the first story of “Beowulf,” Beowulf takes on the responsibility of destroying the great threat, Grendel. This immediately shows the courage, honor and bravery of Beowulf. When Beowulf sailed to the Danes to kill Grendel, he was not searching for money, he was simply putting the Geats lives before his own. Beowulf was not yet famous for actions among the Danes, however this being said, Beowulf was not shy of his past accomplishments in battle, and was confident in his planning to kill Grendel. Readers can identify this confidence that Beowulf possesses when he states, “They have seen my strength for themselves, have watched me rise from the darkness of war” (ln. 246). Beowulf goes on to state his past victories on several occasions. The confidence of Beowulf after his past victories show readers that he is going to be an epic hero, who is victorious on multiple future encounters.

Beowulf had shown epic hero characteristics in every possible way. Whether it was while defeating Grendel, Grendel’s mother or even the great dragon. Even during worse case scenarios, when Beowulf was left with useless weapons, or abandoned by his soldiers, he continued to fight for his people. Beowulf is an epic hero because he never questioned a battle in fear of his own life. After earning to loyalty and trust of the people, Beowulf saw these battles as a form or responsibility rather than a simple way to earn money.
