When I think about all of the people that don’t have an education, I feel grateful for myself. But then I also realize that many people don’t get enough to eat and don’t have a place to live. Many people don’t have a comfortable bed to sleep in at night or a backyard to play in with their friends. These facts bring tears to my eyes. But I can make a difference. Thoughtful acts are not only beneficial to the receiver of the act, but also to the giver, and others in the community. You never know the impact that you may have on others.
A thoughtful act can be beneficial to me. When I give unexpected help to someone or just say a kind word, I feel good from the inside. Doing thoughtful acts for others makes me feel like a selfless person. I feel like I am giving back to the community, instead of just expecting something from it. Also, a thoughtful act can benefit me because I know I helped someone and made a difference. For example, last winter I decided to crochet 5 pairs of socks for the elderly at Memorial Manor. The year before, I crocheted 3 shawls for them. These two small acts of kindness had a huge impact on me. I knew I had made a difference in their lives when I saw the smiles on their faces. A thoughtful act benefits me because it shows me that a good deed is not only good, but also very important. One small deed can have a great impact on someone. For example, when I gave the socks to the elderly, I spent most of my time with one elder: Mr. Anderson. Mr. Anderson had recently lost his wife, and his children left him a nursing home and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. He told me about himself and told me how he had never been happier to get something since his wife had passed away. He was overwhelmed with happiness and that was what made me realize what a thoughtful act can mean to someone. Thoughtful acts can benefit me and influence me to help others more often, and help me grow as a person.
A thoughtful act can benefit the person I helped. Thoughtful acts make the person I helped feel appreciated and loved. It makes them feel like someone was there for them when no one else was.
...ittle could actually mean a lot to those who appreciate it. I also learned that doing something for others could be really fun. Volunteering with the VFW also increased my social skills. By working at the hamburger fest I got to work with other people and that increased my social skills. Doing voluntary work does not have to be boring. If you volunteer with friends or family it could not only benefit you by having fun with people you know, but it could also benefit others as well.
...g of the struggle of poverty and subsequent educational barriers. Though extremely grateful for all of the privilege in my life, it was difficult to realize my fortune until working with the teens at RYP who often do not have two parents, have limited adult influences, and live below the poverty line, making education an afterthought. From the perspective of a tutor and mentor, the educational support that the teens require is unquestionable, just like the injustices they face daily. Through service, not only does one gain perspective into the needs of the local community, but also insight into systemic issues of racism, poverty, crime, education and more. By participating in service and trying to counteract the sources of need for others, one will undoubtedly change their perspective of the framework question, knowing that the very least one should help others.
There has always been a predominant belief in my household that it is important to help others- whether it be volunteering at a food pantry or just keep an elderly neighbor company when no one else is around to do so. The main takeaway from this was that one couldn’t receive good in their life if they never gave any. I have been more eager to follow this through, not necessarily in the spirit of receiving some good in return, but because it gave me a good feeling to know that I was impacting someone’s life in a positive manner. I wanted to be able to foster this feeling and incorporate it into my everyday life, so I could carry that feeling with me wherever I go.
During the [Project Wisdom] program, my principal tells us a quote then he goes on to explain it. For example, he would say, "Danny Thomas once said, 'Success in life has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others." This quote hit me like a thunderbolt. I was constantly thinking about it. Then I saw homeless people while I was walking home from school. I thought of nothing but the quote, so as I got closer to the homeless people, I pulled out my wallet and gave them a ten dollar bill. The feeling I got when the homeless people looked at me is indescribable. After this experience, almost every time someone is in need of something, I give or at least try to give them what they need because of the self-content it brings me. The "Words of Wisdom" program made a difference in my life by helping me discover that it feels good to serve others.
Contributing to prosocial behavior is something that everyone should make an effort at doing especially given that the United States has such an individualist culture. In all five of the situations, I learned that the smallest things like a compliment can make someone’s day which I think is mentally beneficial on both ends. I enjoyed giving out positive energy and I even made friends out of my behaviors. It was very self-rewarding knowing that I made a difference in someone’s day.
Finally I feel like I show service, which is the act of assistance, through my community service. I helped the school with the school play my freshman and sophomore years, working concession stands whenever I am able to, and helping the technology department at the school over the summer. I also help in other places in the community. For example every year I try to help put on a thanksgiving dinner for those in need with my church. This skill will help me throughout my life because it shows how important it is to help others.
This led Grant and Dutton to observe three main things. The first being reciprocity; A sense of obligation to help that person who helped us and reflect on what we have received from the person. The second, is a feeling of dependency and shame in reflecting on what we have received from others. Finally, short-term emotional behavior. Researchers wondered if thinking about the times when we gave something to others might be more effective in promoting aid. Therefore, both researchers hope to find and hope that in reflecting on the granting of benefits to other people will produce a greater increase in prosocial behavior.
As shenahaiti.org The Power of Giving said, “All our lives, we’ve heard about the importance of others: “No man is an island.” Man does not live by bread alone.” The complexity of our society—from today’s difficult economic times, to our immense cultural diversity, to high-tech interconnectedness—makes these proverbs just as, if not more, pertinent than ever. Supporting one another—truly giving of ourselves and our humanity to others—is vital for our global well-being.” This assertion magnifies the fact that charitable donations have indirect benefits because when people help one another with things such as; running errands, help with cleaning, giving money, or even just talking to one another, makes people look up and think, “man he must be a good person.” So the people helping those desperately in need of money are thought upon being a good person, even though that was not their intended purpose. A lot say, “So people who do not donate to charity are not good and thoughtful people?” Absolutely not, plenty of people don’t donate to charity, that does not make them un-thoughtful, or bad, but people who do donate seem to get more praise and
In conclusion I have discussed and provided five scenarios describing several occasions in which I have performed a good deed to help another individual or have witnessed someone else do a good deed to help another individual. While writing each scenario I realized that I perform most of the acts because I felt some type of way.
Secondly, I have been a community volunteer worker for several years. Being a community volunteer has helped me to understand that by obtaining a college degree, I can help impact the lives of many homeless individuals. Recently, as a volunteer of United Methodist Metro Ministries, many of the homeless individuals were amazed that I am almost finished with high school and plan to go to college. One man that I had the opportunity of meeting saddened me because he could not even write his own name. I thought about how his life is forever impaired by his inability to read and write. Perhaps that is one reason he is economically poor. My relationships to persons such as this man have inspired me to want to continue my formal education so that I can help people who have somehow seemed to have lost their way.
...esult, the more directly one sees their personal efforts impact someone else, the more happiness one can gain from the experience of giving. Sometimes generosity requires pushing past a feeling of reluctance because people all instinctively want to keep good things for themselves, but once one is over this feeling, they will feel satisfaction in knowing that they have made a difference in someone else’s life. However, if one lives without generosity but is not selfish, they can still have pleasure from other virtues.
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
The first area that acts of kindness influence involves psychological aspects. One result when performing this task is it allows one to become happier. When focusing on another person, it reduces feelings of loneliness or isolation and can also help to cope with depression. While in the service of others, endorphins are released which are associated with happiness. The discharge of these endorphins provides a longer feeling of calmness and a higher sense of well-being (The Health Benefits of Kindness). In other words, small acts of kindness have a great effect on moods. In return, your mood determines what the rest of the day will be like. Service involves one person focusing on the needs of another. This provides a period of time in which...
The very first time I read the topic of the essay, it reminded me of a movie I watched when I was around 13. “When someone does you a big favour don’t pay it back, pay it forward” is what little Trevor says in the movie “Pay it forward”. Being at the age of 13 I took it as a lesson of life and it gave me additional incentives to help who the most needed me. Most of the times I received the satisfaction of seeing a smile in the face of someone else, and half of the times I was let down realizing that I was just used by someone else. But I decided not to care; I wanted to do something that would have changed that conservative community I lived in.
One reason that any act of kindness makes an impact is that some people need positivity. First off, one act of kindness could change the receiver’s life forever. There are many people in the world that struggle everyday, and motivation and kind acts can contribute to helping them throughout their life. Also, the receiver will have a positive mindset
