I’m going to shock you. Half of all men will get cancer, and a third of all women. Some of you could even die. There’s good news! Your life could be prolonged or your cancer cured with hash oil! Oh ... wait ... it’s not legal ... guess you’ll just have to suck it up. People live with debilitating pain every day because they are unable to get marijuana, while the U.S. government pours money and personnel into a drug war that’s unnecessary. The modes of entry are a lot safer in comparison to other drugs such as injectables with a skyrocketing AIDS risk or pills with questionable purity. Marijuana, weed, hash and Mary Jane are all the same substance. Its use can be in hand-rolled cigarettes known as joints, water pipes known as bongs, or cigars filled with a tobacco/weed mix known as blunts. The processed leaves can also be used as a tea or food additive, provided the leaves are steeped to release the THC, the chemical of the hour. THC overloads the endocannabinoid system, causing the high that everyone knows. After use, the highest residual amounts can be found in pleasure, concentration, time perception, coordination, and memory. Prison is not for the faint of heart, nor the claustrophobic. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with one of one hundred seven adults in prison. This ratio is imperfect; racial minorities are over-represented. 1.69 million are incarcerated on nonviolent drug charges, half of all are marijuana. 89% of all criminal drug charges are simple possession. Imagine the number of individuals serving time for marijuana arrests; what if those resources could be used to investigate, arrest, prosecute, incarcerate, and protect society from criminals such as murderers. Officers can s... ... middle of paper ... ...llion dollars if taxed like alcohol or tobacco. Creation of this industry would lead to more jobs similar to the tobacco industry’s creation. Industrializing marijuana would make it safer through purity laws, making it illegal to mix with anything else. Remember the 1 in 108 statistic? $50,000 would also be saved per possession prisoner. What would the government do with more money? Assist those on help programs or funnel it into the national debt? Wherever this money would go, it’s helpful. Marijuana’s Class I illegal substance state is inarguably unfair. It was titled a Class 1 drug (most dangerous) because it was considered to make white women desire African American men. Obviously, this makes little sense. Many drugs are terrifyingly addictive and dangerously lethal. Marijuana is not one of these drugs. Marijuana’s redeeming qualities should distinguish it.
