There is an ongoing debate whether online courses should be included for universities or not. These online courses are valuable, and universities should include these courses in the options for classes, because an online class is just as effective as a traditional college course. Online courses have just as much interaction with a professor as a traditional college course. Online courses also have students interact with each other. Lastly, online courses offers many benefits that helps the students and administration. Online courses are helpful for people who have any kind of time problems. Online courses are more affordable than the traditional college course. Online courses are more convenient for those who are progressing faster or slower …show more content…
According to the New York Times article,” These typically have about 25 students and are run by professors who often have little interaction with students” (“Trouble”). There can be little interaction with the online course, but that really depends on the student. This does not only apply to online classes, but also it includes traditional courses. With the ongoing increase of the student to professor ratio, the one-on-one interaction time is decreasing or not occurring at all. With the increase of students, the professor will have to teach to a large group of students, and will not have the opportunity to meet his students personally. There is a difference between the two. Online courses are done online, and that gives those students the upper hand because a student can use an online chat service like Skype to talk to their professor personally. Not only can the students do a private call, the students can set up a group call and have a mini lecture with the professor. The online meetings is more convenient because they can do their meeting anywhere with internet, but with a traditional course, they can only meet during office hours. The online students have more of the professor’s time, and can get more out of it because more students can be invited to the chat or chat. In comparison, both course face an issue with interaction, but with online courses, the professor has more of an opportunity to meet with students. The professor can get more out of meetings by inviting more students into a Skype
However, when a student takes an online class the student and professor are at a disadvantage of building an interpersonal relationship. For example, a professor is unable to read the nonverbal cues of a struggling student through a computer screen or is unable to tell if a student is experiencing a true emergency. Just as, a student is unable to read their professors nonverbal cues that a particular chapter or assignment is vital to passing the course. I have taken classes on campus and online classes for three semesters now and have learned that regardless of class format a student needs to be dedicated, structured, self-motivated and not afraid to ask questions. A disadvantage of taking an online class is if a web portal is not working properly.
There are many vast differences between online and traditional courses, first being flexibility in schedule. Traditional courses have a set time and day for the duration of the semester. Attending class is a portion of your grade. You have to make sure you have the time to attend class and not miss over the allotted amount of days. To help with the scheduling, the college usually offers day courses, night courses, and abbreviated summer classes. Traditional classes comes first on your priority list, work, and then lastly your family. Your free time is scheduled around your class schedule. Classes are 2-4 days a week depending on the schedule you choose. Even though it might be somewhat of an inconvenience, you have to keep in mind it is only for a short time and won’t last forever. All of your sacrifices will pay off in the long run; you will have a degree. The second area of contrast is discipline. Traditional classes, are more for the people who need structure to stay on course. Someone is there giving you daily assignments and s...
One major similarity between taking an online course and taking a face-to-face course is the content being taught. The style of the class does not affect what material is being given to the class. For example, if Brian is taking Algebra 2 online and Matt is taking the same course with the same textbook in a traditional classroom, they are both learning the same things. For this reason, it is a matter of availability and preference that determines whether a student should take a class online or in person. They are getting the same caliber of learning either way so the decision can be based off of personal preference.
Recorded video lectures are one aspect of online classes that give them an almost face to face feel. I can see the instructor, watch their presentations and learn from the value added content that they provide in class. The way in which online classes are organized can also be a huge plus for me. I can see what will be coming up and allow me to set my schedule accordingly. By far my favorite aspect has been the open time frame that some professors provide.
“The rate at which enrollments for online classes and education programs is expanding much faster in both the developed and developing worlds than at traditional universities,” claims Reed Karaim. He also states that “Online courses offer the benefits of greater convenience and also a lower total cost. (Karaim, “Expanding Higher Education”). With more online courses being offered on sites such as Udemy and Lynda as well as top universities such as Harvard and MIT, there is less incentive for students to seek education from universities
In a traditional class when working on group assignments students get to work on the assignments together inside class and outside the class. Students get to get to know more of one another in a traditional class and get to physically accomplish their tasks in the classroom. Online classes have no face-to-face communication with any of their peers and that makes it harder for them to accomplish assignments because it makes it harder for them to build team relations within the students. Ferdig, R. E., & Roehler, L. R. (2003) state that: “Researches has suggested that the use of discussion forums has the potential to increase interactivity in classrooms”. Face-to-face communication within a classroom is a better way to interact with other colleges and its a better way to build team
Many believe that by taking online classes students don’t have as much work. On the contrary, college students are generally expected to spend six to nine hours outside of each class reading, completing regular homework assignments and studying. Online students typically have to spend time doing the same type of school work; instructional PowerPoints and videos to cover what students gain from class lectures. Communicating with the teacher is typically easier and more common on campus, however, online and traditional classes both provide mechanisms through which students can interact and get help. On campus, students can talk informally with instructors before and after class, ask questions during class and stop by during office hours. Online students can call or email instructors, and sometimes use cellphones to text. Discussions and teamwork are common in classes regardless of the format. In traditional classes, students normally listen to lectures from instructors, but can also get a chance in many classes to offer ideas and discuss topics. Campus classes also usually include team activities or projects. Online classes include discussions as well, but they take place through online discussion forums. The conversation also tends to play out over time as students periodically check for new posts and reply. The structures of both online and traditional classes vary, but similar in a way. With technology, most of the school work is done through computer whether it’s in an online class or a traditional one. Classes are accessible wherever students go and are convenient and customizable for students depending on busy schedules and everyday life. Also, students can communicate with classmates or their professors through email or the school website. Connections with others can be made not only on a campus, but through
Some students within society need to have online learning to complete college degrees due to their lifestyles. While it is good to have online learning as an option if one chooses, it should not be the only option available to some students. Some may argue that online education is not creating discrimination within the educational environment. Furthermore, some may suggest that online learning is benefiting our students in society. There has been a breakthrough in time and geographical limitations of education via online courses (Ho, 2009).
The next phase of the new program and course development process is to examine, research, and design the new proposed course as an online course. Online course delivery options must be explored. A variety of resources need to identified to successfully develop a new online course. These resources may include a variety of publications, possibly even the oversight of a faculty mentor. California State University, Chico provides a detailed site for the development of an online course. In developing the new course in public management as an online course the Chico State rubric was used as a guide that helped with the design of the online delivery system. I have found that use of rubrics in online design is supported by many institutions. The Chico State rubric for online teaching and learning served as the rubric that was used to develop the new online course in public management for Folsom Lake College.
Because of the flexibility, the course load seems to be all the more intense. The course load is more rigorous being that work is graded on a stricter scale than traditional colleges, and also entails a greater work load. In the article, Study Looks at Online Learning vs. Traditional Instruction, Angiello states,” Many instructors and understudies of online colleges, while lauding the accessibility of online education, will typically recognize that the cost paid for this adaptability is investing extra effort (Angiello 2010).” So, although the convenience is there, according to the schedules of many, the overall grind is much more intense. This provides reasoning for why students taking online courses are perhaps more prepared and properly adequate candidates for employment positions, versus a traditional student with the same degree. In the same article previously listed, Angiello writes, “understudies who participated in online courses performed better than students receiving the same material through conventional lectures (Angiello 2010). It is evident through the article that, because of the more rigorous work load, students are adhering to the concepts further in an online environment than a traditional setting, thus presenting online learning beneficial in terms of knowledge and qualifications.
For the students who do have a busy life, they might find it harder to attend a traditional classroom, so they have the option of taking online classes and making the classes fit around their time schedule. Another concern that some students might have is communication. Some students might not need to have a teacher in front of them and teach the course material to them, whereas some students might need the teacher teaching it to them.... ... middle of paper ...
First off, students can learn from a single professor. "Potentially, 100,000 students can be in the same class at the same time, listening and learning via voice, watching the professor write on the electronic white board, posing questions via chat/e-mail, and viewing related materials during class time to facilitate learning." (Leonard, 1997) It can also "support homework submission, immediate web based testing of students knowledge of facts, concepts, applications, and quick links to chat rooms from after class student discussion on every aspect of the professor's points each day. (Leonard, 1997)
A lot of different courses are offered over the internet. Some of these may be the right choice for certain students. One problem I see with this is that when the student has a question or does not understand something, they would have to research it instead of having a person to person interaction with the teacher. Also the teacher may sometimes offer examples that come from personal experiences. Computers cannot take the place of a human being.
In the past of the years technology has advanced and it affords us the opportunity to conduct classes online. Although this is not an easy decision, it is another way of studying when you need to work. At college level attending classes is important, but with new technology taking classes online is easier than it sounds. Regardless of the fact that technology helps a lot you need to possess some skills for you to succeed in online courses. Communication may be one of the most vital skills you need, without leaving any other with less importance.
Beside that“… [that] some U.S. states are now requiring young people to take a least one online course during their schooling” (Loertscher, Koechlin 50). The term of the online learning, it is demonstrated through some software have been provided by private cooperation to schools. These software such as Blackboard, Webex. Litmos, and others. Therefore, the online learning has become more available and reliable because of the technology development in the 21st century inspire of technology. When it comes to the online learning been provided by the schools and other educational institutes some argued that, it will reduce the education cost, saves time, and provide more quality of the learning, but other said it will not make any differences and lower the quality of
