Genetically Modified Organisms are “living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering.” (Non GMO Project) GMOs are engineered in this fashion so that farmers can more efficiently produce and harvest crops. GMOs are used in the production of every crop in the United States, but despite their wide range of use, GMOs are not socially accepted throughout the United States. Claims have been made that GMO’s are harmful to the consumer’s health and can cause diseases because of the thought that “they don’t understand the science behind GMOs” (Entine and Randall, 2015), despite the fact that “88% of scientists believe genetically modified foods are safe.” (Entine and Randall, 2015) THEORETICAL BASIS …show more content…

By increasing crop yields, farmers are able to better provide the world, or in this case the United States, with more food. This helps with the problem of the lower classes of society having limited access to food because there is simply more food to go around, and an increase in the supply of food leads to a decrease in cost nationwide. Comparatively, if farmers were to use non-GMO or organic crops, crop yields would go down, which would decrease the supply of food nationwide, therefore increasing the food disparity between the wealthy and the poor because the wealthy could afford these organic foods, while the poor could
