Genetically modified foods are found in almost every store and are very common in America. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is a very controversial and heated topic in the agricultural industry. Humans first began to genetically alter organisms and crops in the 1990’s and began to be widely used in the early 2000’s. This new technology has scared many uninformed people who fear change and new agricultural techniques. GMO fearing individuals need to realize the benefits of GMO’s; genetically altered crops are the future of agriculture. Genetically altered crops are essential because of today's growing population, safe, cheap technology, and the many examples of successful crops.
“The world population has recently exceeded seven billion people, thats seven billion mouths to feed. The earth’s population isn't getting any smaller either, and is projected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050”(UN News, 2013). Currently if everyone consumed the amount of an average american it would require five planet earths. With this large increase it is important to find new ways to increase crop production, and GMO crops will help increase yield and decrease waste.”To meet the projected population demands of 2050 Agriculture production will have to increase 60% by weight. By 2050 cereals production needs to increase by 940 million tonnes, meat must almost double and increase by 196 tonnes, and oil crops need to increase by 133 million tonnes”(CGIAR, n.d.). Until growing crops on another planet becomes possible, we only have a set amount of land to produce our grocery needs. Genetically modified organisms are a necessary change in agriculture because of the large, growing population, the safe healthy technology used, and the variety of examples of successful crops. Genetically enhanced foods are found in thousands of stores all throughout America. From their beginnings in the 1990’s these beneficial enhancements have been strongly argued because of fear of change. Despite irrational concerns, GMO products have pushed their way into agriculture and have become the majority for many crops; agriculture is changing and GMOs are the new future of agriculture.
