Hippocrates has been quoted, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food” (Asiado). In his day the idea of genetically modifying food did not exist. At that time the food that existed was what grew naturally on earth; his opinion was that the cures to diseases could be found in those foods. Fast forward 2000 years and the topic of GMO’s is a topic greatly debated among those in the field and the general public is starting to become aware as well. Most people have at least heard about the possible dangers to one’s health associated with the consumption of GMO’s in our food; they may have also heard the other side proclaim how GMO’s could solve world hunger. In 2009, an organization of physicians known as The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), conducted animal research on GM foods. They stated, “There are serious health risks associated with eating GM foods. Those risks include: infertility, immune system problems, accelerated aging, disruption of insulin and cholesterol regulation, gastrointestinal problems and changes in the liver, spleen and gastrointestinal tract…there is more than a casual association with genetically modified foods and adverse health effects. There is causation” (Smith 12). The findings have startled many and other studies have been performed and show even more health problems including kidney damage, breast tumors and premature death in rats. An outcome of a European study with lab animals has created a lot of question on the topic. In this study rats “were fed a popular GM corn developed horrifically oversized tumors and organ damage. That study has been widely criticized. But so have studies done by the industry showing that GMOs are safe” (Smith). There are no long-term studies done on humans showing the safety of GMO foods to humans which causes group dispute.
