Approximately one in every 691 babies is born with Down syndrome each year, in the United States. Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that is associated with physical growth delays, distinctive facial features as well as mild to severe intellectual disabilities. Early intervention is not a common occurrence for children who have Down syndrome. Much of the time, we associate early intervention with children who obtain different delays and disabilities, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder. Imagine being able to promote the development of a child who would typically fall behind due to such a delay. Early intervention is the solution. Early intervention is an extremely beneficial way to promote the development of a child with Down syndrome. These programs advance the development of a child’s physical and cognitive delays as well as communication and social/emotional disabilities.
Children who are diagnosed with Down syndrome typically have difficulty meeting significant developmental milestones. Though these children may still meet these milestones, it can take several months more than a typically developing child. Early intervention can help advance these children with several milestones. The primary domains many researchers have focused on are physical and cognitive development along with communicative and language skills and social/emotional delays.

Keep in mind that Early Invention programs have clearly altered the developmental progress of a child with Down syndrome in a positive and upward direction. It has promoted the physical, cognitive, and communicative domains as well as the social and emotional development of these children. Children who are diagnosed with Down syndrome have the ability to reach these developmental milestones, with the help of early intervention. Finding a program and placement for each child is significant to their developmental and academic success. Advancing a child’s development is no longer something we “may be able to accomplish.” It has been shown in many studies that early intervention has supportive and beneficial effects on their development.
