Most people assume diversity is limited to race, some will even included gender; but in reality it considers “differences among groups of people and individuals based on ethnicity, race, socio-economic status, gender, language, religion, sexual orientation, geographic area etc.” (Dean, P) . Diversity included everything and anything that makes a one human different from another. With this in mind, our group explored the benefits of diversity, the conflicts it can cause, how to help solve diversity issues, and why businesses should encourage a diverse work place.
The benefits of diversity includes how it exposes people to people to new ideas, shows people a variety of viewpoints, sparks creativity, and helps to break stereotypes. The first three are simply to say that when a lot of different people are grouped together, there will be a lot of different ideas and this can lead to seeing things from another person’s perspective and/or think of more options. The last one, breaking stereotypes, is in the idea that when you actually work with a “stereotype” you’ll see that not everyone is the same and not all stereotypes are true for everyone. An example of this is if someone working with a homosexual man. Homosexual people in general have some strange assumptions made about them but the hope is that when someone actual works with a gay man the individual can see that not all homosexual males wear glitter, rainbow clothes, or have a crush on every other man alive. All these things are reasons why people should want to work in a diverse community.
While there are a lot of benefits, there are a lot of issues that sometimes come with diverse work place. Most of these problems are arguments, communication issues, forced diversity, favori...

...ain race, or if an employee discounts the ideas of people below or above a certain age, it is our responsibility to address the issue politely and respectfully. Identify issues among your employees and bring them up when assessing their performance. This leads to the last, encourage interactions. When you identify diversity-related issues in the workplace, discuss them with your employees in a non-confrontational manner and encourage people to work with those different them themselves.
The last thing we talked about is why businesses should care about diversity. The reasons are because it creates a better society and work environment, it gives a company a wide variety of values; make a company more competitive and adaptable which can lead to broader service and reaching more people. The more excepting individuals and companies are, the more success everyone will be.
