The Benefits and Detriments of Advertising Advertising is a huge part of our lives whether we realize it or not. We see ads everywhere- on television, on the internet, and even on our phones. However, for the most part it seems like people tend to think that advertising does not really affect what they buy, other than to inform them what products are out there. On the other hand, according to eMarketer, companies in the US spent over $171 billion on advertising in 2013 (“Total US Ad Spending”). So obviously, companies think that advertising is very beneficial to them and has a huge effect on consumers or else they would not want to spend so much money on it. I tend to agree with the companies who know that often people do not research adequately before they buy something. This is because it takes time and effort to gain information. But advertisements are usually in the middle of what we are already doing, don’t require very much effort at all, and are occasionally entertaining as well, which makes them an efficient, if biased, source of information. This is probably why some people do not look beyond the advertising when choosing a product and also why the companies with the best advertising campaign do well, not necessarily the one with the best product.
