There are many beneficial health aspects regarding marijuana. Therefor there are many that seek the drug as an alternative to medication, as results are shown faster and there is a positive influence on several diseases. There are many doctors in the country who recommend that patients try marijuana , although having full knowledge that they are encouraging the patient to go against the law. According to Kevin Zeese and William Ruzzamenti , “That 's because there 's very strong evidence that marijuana works as a medicine. It 's effective in controlling muscle spasms for people with neurological problems, in controlling nausea and increasing appetite for cancer and AIDS patients, and in controlling the eye pressure that causes damage in …show more content…
Do to the fact that some of those patients have a hard time keeping the pill in their stomach, because it does not sit well and they end up vomiting it out before it could have had effect on the body. Marijuana can give these patients immediate effect as it can be inhaled and get to the blood brain barrier much quicker than the regular form: pills. “...,is extremely effective in healing short term pain, motor problems, stomach nausea and chemotherapy for cancer patients” (Ultius). Marijuana also offers fewer negative side-effects than any other treatment. According to Executive Director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, Allen St. Pierre, “Evidence indicates that marijuana and its derivatives are suitable for patients suffering from various types of chronic pain, especially those unresponsive to traditional analgesics. In addition, cannabis may offer fewer negative side-effects than opioids - which can be highly addictive - and NSAIDS [non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs], which can induce stomach ulcers, bleeding, and kidney failure.” . The treatment one gets at the hospital could create more problems than the ones already existent. Patients could even get addicted to the medication prescribed to
Marijuana has had a negative appearance towards the public and government, but that all seems to be changing. Medical marijuana has started to have a huge impact on the United States and the world. It is a borderline substance that some people frown upon, but it has boosted the economy and has helped thousands of people across the United States overcome illnesses. But most people relate medical marijuana to recreational marijuana, which is still illegal in some states. Although many individuals find medical marijuana illegal, and unnecessary, it is a natural herb used to help symptoms caused by chronic illnesses. Over three million Americans use medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is the most widely used drug used to treat chronic illnesses. The use of medical marijuana has been a controversial issue here in America. Although, there are healthcare professionals that do believe that the use of medical marijuana can be very beneficial for certain patients. Just as there are benefits associated with the use of medical marijuana there are also negative effects associated with it.
Many drugs that are prescribed by doctors have large warning labels on their bottle that list the various negative effects. When my brother would take the medications for his migraines, it would often leave him feeling spacey and disorganized. He would often refer to this spacey state as being in zombie mode. In this instance, the side effects caused by the medications were worse than the ailment they were curing. Christopher tried numerous medications in an attempt to find one that worked for his body. In his article The Woman with Knives in Her Neck, David Casarett explains, “of course, marijuana has side effects of its own, ranging from a dry mouth and rapid heart rate to confusion and paranoia. But one patient figured out a way to avoid those, through small frequent doses” (Casarett). When using smaller dosages of marijuana patients can avoid the side effects of being high that occur when overdosing on marijuana. Another way to avoid the unwanted feelings that can be caused by marijuana is to seek out stains of the plant with lower HTC levels. Once again, when compared to opioids, marijuana is the best choice. By legalizing marijuana for medical uses, patients would no longer experience the unfavorable side effects that are caused by the medications that doctors currently
People should stop arguing about the use of marijuana and how marijuana is bad, because people only like to research the cons instead of including the pros. Despite the fact that people believe everything they hear, they should look up more and try to see how good marijuana can be for them. Marijuana is good for their health, and it has helped to cure people who are very ill. Marijuana is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol, there has been studies proven that people have died over drinking other than by smoking marijuana. Marijuana will be able to have less people prosecuted for the possession of carrying it around, which will help people not get arrested for a small amount of marijuana.
Medical Marijuana: Why or Why not? Marijuana was first introduced by the Chinese back in the B.C (before Christ) time period where it existed as a substance that carried the ability to achieve euphoria or a “high” as we refer to it today. In the early 4200s B.C. Marijuana was better known for its medicinal value where it was being used to treat rheumatism, gout and malaria (Narcocon International). Of course, society at the time was aware of the other effects marijuana had, however at the time, they primarily focused on the medication capacity marijuana contained. Fast forward to 2015, where the medical use of marijuana is the biggest controversial topic, where society views marijuana more of a harmful substance than a solution to nearly all of the medical conditions people encounter.
Marijuana, also known as weed, is smoked for the high, as well as for “nausea, glaucoma, appetite simulations, mucous membrane inflammation, leprosy, fever, dandruff, hemorrhoids, obesity, asthma, urinary tract infections, cough, anorexia associated with weight loss in AIDS patients, pain, and multiple sclerosis” (“Marijuana Overview Information”). Medicines to treat some of the listed ailments have not been found as of, yet so patients are suffering from pain and ongoing symptoms from their disease or illness. The only treatment for some of these ongoing symptoms and pain is medical marijuana. This is why medical marijuana is being pushed to be legalized in America. The “high” that users get from smoking marijuana relieves pain for a short period of time. Dr. Mark Ware tested cannabis (mar...
In a recent article by Okie (2005), some doctors prescribe medical marijuana to deal with chronic or neuropathic pain. Okie provides information about one patient, Angel McCleary Riach who is dependent on the drug marijuana because she found that it helped her control her pain and increase her appetite. The patient and her doctor Ludico, believed that Riach’s health will fail extremely if she is denied the use of medical marijuana, because she will not be able to bear the pain. Although the doctors in the article prescribe marijuana primarily to control pain, some have found it affective for treating muscle spasms, mood disorders, AIDS, migraines, and to increase appetite in cancer patients(Okie,2005) One doctor stated that many of their patients that are using the drug marijuana, but buying it illegally, but for the patients with a family that is too much of a risk. This is a continuous struggle in their everyday life, and without the legalization of medical marijuana these patients will continue...
Opioids, narcotics, stimulants, and central nervous system depressants are commonly prescribed drugs to treat a variety of disorders and diseases. However because of their mind-altering or psychoactive effects, they are often abused and can be detrimental to your health. Marijuana when used for medical reasons can be very effective in treatment for controlling symptoms and diseases. There are many reasons that the federal government should consider legalizing marijuana for medical use. It is one of the most safe, cheap, effective, and least addictive substances that can be used to treat physical and mental illness.
For over thirty years, it has been debated whether the use of medical marijuana should be allowed for medical purposes. Marijuana can be used as a treatment for nausea and vomiting, as well as a pain reliever from other medical treatments such as chemotherapy. Others argue that its use can lead to addiction and could lead to health risks such as lung and heart problems over time. Therefore, medical marijuana should be strictly limited for medical use and monitored to meet the needs of the patient. Medical marijuana should be allowed to relieve pain from illnesses and other treatments, and to assist with treating patients with other preexisting conditions.
Those against medical marijuana have given many reasons for why it should not be legalized. One of the main reasons they argue is that “Marijuana smoke may contain known carcinogens and produces dependency in users” (Medical). But there have been many studies it has be proven that it actually does have some harm that is also associated with smoking, but the according to National Academy of Science they believe that “marijuana’s short term medical benefits outweigh any smoking-related harms for some patients”(Medical). Though marijuana has been proven to be less damaging to the lungs than tobacco, a study in 2006 “found no evidence that marijuana smokers had higher rates of lung cancer” (Medical Marijuana). The FDA have conducted test proving the effectiveness of marijuana many times and have found that the cannabinoids in marijuana are helpful in “treating pain associated with chemotherapy, postoperative recovery, and spinal cord injury, as well as neuropathic pain, which is often experienced by patients with metastatic cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes”.
Although marijuana can be used as a pain reliever, it may cause new pain, even while taking other pain away. The psychological effects of weed may not be realized by the smoker until it is too late. Much like a cigarette smoker needs nicotine, a high will be something a “hash” smoker will run to, and in the future, it may become addictive for the smoker. As more states move to legalizing medical marijuana, more people will have access to the drug. Although some effects of smoking marijuana may help people with sickness, the other effects are too harmful to accept smoking marijuana as a medical practice. Marijuana is addictive and harmful and shouldn’t be distributed to anyone.
Saraia Driver CC Comp Mrs. Johnson April 24, 2014 Marijuana The increase in marijuana use among teens and adults has risen substantially. Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the United States and is slowly rising as more and more teens and adults start using the drug. According to the Health Service Administration, 7.3 percent of Americans over 12 reported using marijuana last year. Proponents of marijuana want to legalize the plant for medical purposes, but opponents claim that weed is a dangerous, addictive gateway drug that poses significant health threats to users.
Lauren Villa, who possesses her Bachelor of Arts in creative writing and her master’s in public health, states the facts of alcohol versus marijuana: “Besides alcohol, marijuana is the most commonly detected drug in drivers involved in car accidents. One study found that marijuana increased the odds of being in car accident by 83% … When alcohol was involved, the odds of being in a car accident increased more than 2,200%!” (Villa). Although alcohol has a higher risk factor than marijuana it is still legal for adults 21 and over in the United States to buy and consume. Legalization of marijuana could be beneficial to the world today, but because society is fallen, similar to the civilization in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the regulation
Marijuana (or cannabis) is a plant that can be used in various ways. It can be both smoked using joints, pipes bongs or other paraphernalia and ingested by baking it into food or ingesting concentrated butane hash oil. Eating the mixed in THC with food causes a slower process of reaching a high since it has to get digested first before the THC can reach the blood stream. Smoking the marijuana allows the delta-9-tetrahydrocannbinol (THC) to move through the blood stream quicker than when ingested which gives the user a faster high. Thus, smoking marijuana is more common among users, but at the same time it is more dangerous since the lungs are absorbing all the tar. There are many affects it can have on the brain such as memory, coordination,
Marijuana is an olive-drab combination of the preserved herbs of Cannabis sativa. More and more states are legalizing marijuana for recreational and medicinal purposes. My personal beliefs is that marijuana should be available in all states for medicinal purposes only. My father could have used marijuana for an anti-nausea/ appetite stimulant while suffering from Renal Cell Carcinoma cancer many years ago.He had chemotherapy and radiation that lasted until his death and suffered with nausea and many other symptoms. Medicinal marijuana, or medicinal cannabis, is cannabinoids that are recommended by medical practitioners for their patients. Few to little proof displays marijuana can decrease revulsion and vomiting at the same time during chemotherapy, boost appetite in human beings with HIV/AIDS, decrease convulsive attacks, decrease constant physical suffering and muscle contractions. The cannabis plant has a history of medicinal use dating back thousands of years across many cultures. Medicinal cannabis can be prescribed to patients in an assortment of ways: dermal patches,Capsules, lozenges, tinctures, oral or dermal sprays, or cannabis edibles. I always believed that marijuana was a gateway drug, and never considered the medicinal properties. I believe now that the United States should legalize Marijuana all over the country for medicinal usage that has been given to a patient by a doctor in the form that does not have the THC high in marijuana, but has the capabilities of still helping chronic illnesses.
I have written many papers over the medical use of marijuana over the course of my high school, and college life. I have come to understand the ups, and downs of the system very clearly. Being a non-smoker my entire life, I would say my stance is very different from what some may think. I am a supporter of the legalization of medical marijuana. I take my stance on the fact that multiple studies, and people themselves are living proof that marijuana works. Although trying to make something like this legal is way out of the question. At least for a few more years I would say. Pharmaceutical companies are the biggest one against the movement. Why? By legalizing marijuana they are set to lose million of dollars in revenue. These are the people that give millions of dollars to the campaigns of
