Believe In Us

I have lost my faith. No, I'm not talking about my religion. The faith I'm referring to is a hope, a belief in the world and those people that inhabit it. In my short 17 years of life, I have not been given a good enough reason to believe that humans are worth the skin they inhabit. This city, this country, this entire world is filled with people who share common negative traits: envy, hypocrisy, ignorance, arrogance, prejudice, and a myriad of other things that show just how immature our society and how little we have really progressed in the few thousand years we have inhabited this planet. For these reasons, the only faith I have is that humanity will one day drive ourselves to extinction.

Now, I may sound like every other teenager that preaches about world peace and acceptance, but I do not force my opinions on anyone. I will also admit when I am wrong or if I am being selfish, critical, or any number of negative things. The most popular girl in school refuses to accept that anyone else can possibly be prettier or more liked than her. The high school couple that has been together for a tremendously long 3 months does not believe that any other person can love anyone as much as they love their partner. We cannot yet handle the responsibility of being entirely responsible for furthering our society for the greater good. This is why I have lost faith in the world.

My faith lies only in the fact that every person has the potential to change the world. We need only to put in the effort to make a difference in the lives of one person, a group of people, or even an entire civilization. This is how movements start which change into great shifts in history which could mean great possibilities for advancement of our species. I may not have faith in the society of today, but that does not mean that this fact cannot be changed. Faith is as easily changed as the society that produces it.
