Being a teacher is much more than instructing through a set curriculum. Being a teacher requires patience, commitment, understanding, and compassion on all levels. It is expected of teachers to go the extra mile for every student. Being a teacher is not always easy because challenges arise. Challenges such as misbehavior, conflicting philosophies, and emotional attachment to students. Yet, teaching is also a job full of rewards. I believe the greatest rewards will come through seeing growth in students, building strong relationships, and becoming a mentor to my students. I hope to create very good relationships with all of my students. I have a soft spot in my heart for students who tend to struggle a little more than the others. I may find it a challenge when students refuse my help. Each student is different and finding the right way to motivate and the right time to let go may be difficult. When faced with this situation I would reach out to them one on one, or even ask other student to help/tutor if needed. I understand how religious views and practices cannot be lead in the classroom by the teacher. Though I have strong views in my life philosophy, I do not intend to push them onto others or demand they be respected. I will, however, conduct my classroom in a fair and just manner. I may find it difficult to handle if I am very personally attacked or discounted because of my beliefs. I do not want to encourage religious tolerance in my classroom. I want to encourage understanding and acceptance for all backgrounds, preferences, and choices. This can always be a challenge because acceptance is not a natural response to something that is different (Kauchak & Eggen, p. 260). Challenges arise and are a struggle to work through, but the motivation that rewards bring make it worth it. Seeing students grow and learn new concepts through the course of a semester or year is exciting and worth celebrating. Test scores and teacher evaluations take a snapshot of how a classroom and teacher are performing, but my main concern will be the students. As I mentioned earlier, growth is visible and measured in many different ways. Some students do not always see the improvements they are making. I believe taking time to evaluate and make goals in study is important (Kauchak & Eggen, p.
