Schools in the United States today are increasingly diverse and are continually seeking new ways to adapt to the broad range of students within them. America as a society has in fact changed from that of a “melting pot” to more of a “salad bowl”, and educators are expected to meet the needs of each individual that walks into a classroom. It is not necessarily an effortless task, and it is not for the masses, but it is for me. I am interested in not just having a job, but having a vocation. Bringing home a paycheck is not the reason I yearn to be an educator, truly enriching students with knowledge and providing real purpose is why I want to be a teacher. I believe that I possess what it takes to educate students in a way that provides equal opportunities, and flexible instruction that will support them on their journey for knowledge, regardless of their cultural background or learning style.
Being a college student provides an easy topic for a conversation starter with individuals that you may not know, or have not seen in a long period of time, “What are you majoring in?” I have heard it many times and am proud to say in response, “I am majoring in Elementary Education.” Yet, every time I evoke the opportunity to talk about being an education major I receive the same response, “Oh, good luck”, yet not the kind of good luck you hear when you’re about to run a race, but an often sarcastic or condescending good luck. It puzzled me at first as to why that is the first response in discussing such an integral part of our society, and then, through more experience in a classroom setting I have discovered why. ...ry to look at it as me being a gentle hearted person, I seek out the truth in other’s and look for the best in every person I meet. Gearing that personal aspect towards children has already made me a very well loved tutor, camp counselor, and volunteer to students of all ethnic backgrounds. I have watched people give up on children because they are too much of a challenge and I believe those children are the ones that need love, kindness and patience the most.
No matter where my life takes me I am certain I will be surrounded by the younger generation, the youth of tomorrow is my passion and I will make that show through my work. The greatest gift I surmise teachers gain in the classroom is the opportunity to learn and grow alongside the individuals they are teaching. What I am most excited for is the growth that myself, and my prospective students will encounter.
