There is a coexisting relationship between being a Christian and being a student. A Christian must pursue all avenues of life with Christ as the center of their focus. A student seeks to learn and must challenge oneself to gain knowledge throughout life. For a student, college is one avenue available for them to travel to attain this goal. If someone is a Christian student, they must realize that there is no separation of meaning between the two words. They exist together. This relationship shapes why the student learns and how they learn. Through intellectual hospitality, an article by Stanley Hauerwas and the practice of reading, one gains perspective on the meaning of being a Christian student.
The concept of intellectual hospitality is integral to the learning process of a Christian student. Kim Phipps (174) describes intellectual hospitality as a concept that focuses on the care and concern for the person, necessitates inviting others into conversation, listening without prejudging, and affirming the value of others and their perspectives even when legitimate disagreement exists. Intellectual hospitality answers the question of why a Christian student must learn because while exercising it, one can honor God by showing love to others in order to become more like Him. With this in mind, it must be remembered that many people will not share the same views as the student, and may even look down on them for their views. The Christian student must show intellectual hospitality towards this person by reminding oneself to humbly approach this person with the intention to love them as Christ does. Being a Christian shapes the way a college student learns by focusing all their intentions toward God above anything else. This influences both why and how the student learns because it causes them to look past their studies as simply a means of doing school work and causes them to understand that each time they do schoolwork or attend class, that this can be a spiritual act of worship. It is through the concept of intellectual hospitality, the writings of Stanley Hauerwas and the practice of reading that a Christian college student can shape their learning experience.
