In today’s society children can be super ramped up especially with all the sugar and junk food lying around. Most parents may start to wonder if sugar or a short temper is all that is affecting their child. A child can exhibit multiple signs of anything when observed closely enough. Many parents do not want to acknowledge that their child may have an issue far beyond their control. According to the article, "Children Who Have Attentional Disorders: Diagnosis and Evaluation.” which can be found in Pediatrics in Review, children who have Attention Deficit demonstrate basic signs of inattention, impulsivity, and over activity. The majorities of these behaviors are not appropriate for the child’s age and does not let them reach their full potential. Some diagnosis that a child can receive may require medication, therapy, or both to get a child on track depending on severity of the disorder. Children suffering from concentration issues embody a very assorted population that may display a very large range of symptom severity and a wide scale of diagnoses that can go along with each symptom. Attention disorders are around six times more likely to affect males versus females. Around half of the children that have symptoms of hyperactivity and attention issues carry those symptoms into adulthood. At least one in four families in the U.S. is affected by mental illnesses. Unfortunately there is no cure for this range of illnesses, which have been around for thousands of years. Of the American adult population, 5.4 percent have a serious mental illness. These health conditions are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood, behavior, or some combination of these. They are also associated with distress and sometimes impaired functioning. In 1990 the total cost of mental health services in the U.S. was $148 billion. According to a new report by the Mental Health Foundation, one in five children suffer from a mental health problem. In the early eighties, children were being diagnosed with a mental illness that consistently brings them out of focus. The mental illness was later named, ADD or ADHD, and not known as an illness but as a disorder. Soon enough ADD was no longer used for diagnoses and became considered an outdated term among doctors. Therefore, instead of ADD and ADHD being two different types of disorders they are now both claimed as attention deficit hyperactive disorder. Although these two types of deficits have inattention difficulties as the primary symptom, they both can not be combined due to ADD having its own preferences on what makes the child or adult inattentive in day to day situations.

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), once called hyperkinesis or minimal brain dysfunction, is one of the most common mental disorders among children. (Elia, Ambrosini, Rapoport, 1999) It affects 3 to 5 percent of all children, with approximately 60% to 80% of these children experiencing persistence of symptoms into adolescence and adulthood, causing a lifetime of frustrated dreams and emotional pain. There are two types of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: an inattentive type and a combined type. The symptoms of ADHD can be classified into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. This behaviour stops ADHD sufferers from focussing deliberately on organising and completing a specific task that they may not enjoy, learning new skills or information is proved to be impossible. An example of such behaviour is recognised by the report written by the National Institute of Mental Health where one of the subjects under study was unable to pass schooling examinations due to her inattentive behaviour. Such behaviour can damage the person's relationships with others in addition to disrupting their daily life, consuming energy, and diminishing self-esteem. The purpose of this research was to describe and understand Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the most effective treatment options that are available today. It makes concentration difficult, large tasks seem insurmountable, and causes impulsive and hyperactive tendencies. Fortunately, research and experiments have led to new and effective treatments to help those who suffer from this disorder (Dupaul 8). Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, better known as ADHD, is a chronic condition affecting millions of children, and often persisting to adulthood. Individuals with this mental disorder face struggle with concentration, and controlling hyperactivity along with impulsive behaviour. It seems that more and more children are diagnosed with ADHD in ties with bad behaviour, and the inability to focus; however, ADHD is a real issue which can be too often looked past. ADHD can lessen with age and maturity, and treatment provides that extra push to deal with the symptoms. Many believe that medication and treatment is not the best approach for children with this illness; yet in most cases, medication and treatment is a beneficial tool which eases the individual of difficulty with focus or concentration, resulting in improvements with social behaviour, academics, and lifestyle.
There has been an ongoing debate about whether the mental disorder ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is over-diagnosed.
