Alaskans are a social bunch, and all things considered, it’s hard for me to think of anything that has brought more of us together than a good beer. Today, I am here to tell you that I believe Beer is a catalyst.
Math was never my subject, but I would probably wear out my fingers and toes just trying to count the number friends I’ve made over a cold hefeweisen (and I actually drink more Belgian Browns!).
Without Beer, how could this frozen Alaskan have ever spent a moment laughing with prolific brewer and writer Charlie Papazian? After a concert a few years back, I shared a toast and some laughs with perhaps the worlds finest jazz virtuoso Al DiMeola. More valuable suds that night could not be found.
Sometimes, I like to re-apply this catalyst with old friends like Ken Prestegard from Specialty Imports, or brew connoisseur Randy Kaer, just to keep the bonds firm.

Last week I bought a futon off craigslist, and the seller was Iraq veteran and serious brewing student Dustin Slinker. This guy has spent years fighting for our country overseas, and now he is back home. For a change, he is taking a break from land mines and dune spiders to brew beer the right way. It was great to meet him, and hear his enthusiasm about fresh hops and select grain. Belgium is known for a culture of high-quality beer and this concept was formulated by an electrical engineer from Fort Collins, Colorado. The electrical engineer, Jeff Lebesch, was traveling through Belgium on his fat-tired mountain bike when he envisioned the same high-quality beer in Colorado. Lebesch acquired the special strain of yeast used in Belgium and took it back to his basement in Colorado and the experimentation process was initiated. His friends were the samplers and when they approved the beer it was marketed. In 1991, Lebesch opened the New Belgium Brewing Company (NBB) with his wife, Kim Jordan, as the marketing director. The first beer and continued bestseller, Fat Tire Amber Ale, was named after the bike ride in Belgium. The operation went from a basement to an old railroad depot and then expanded into a custom-built facility in 1995. The custom-built facility included an automatic brew house, quality-assurance labs and technological innovations. NBB offers permanent, seasonal and one-time only beers with a mission to be a lucrative brewery while making their love and talent visible. In the early parts of the 20th Century, Canada experimented with banning alcohol consumption. There were some exceptions to this, but most of Canada’s Provincial governments issued some sort of prohibitory laws. The exception being Québec who only prohibited hard liquor, meaning that they allowed the production and consumption of beverages, such as, beer. This drive towards prohibition started during the mid-19th Century. It all started during the Temperance Movement, when proponents voluntarily abstained from alcohol.
