The Nursing Career, Past And Future Of Nursing

Throughout this semester, I have gained so much more knowledge on what it truly means to become a professional registered nurse. A nurse needs to have concern for the well-being of others and also want to make a difference in a person’s life. Nurses play critical roles as a caregiver, educator, listener, and advocate. Nursing is a field where there will be continuous learning, which is a crucial component in providing optimal care.

Becoming a Registered Nurse The field of nursing is constantly evolving which results in lifelong learning. As a nurse, you need to have the willingness and motivation to enhance your knowledge. As a student nurse, you need to attend class and clinical, as well as actively participate. While in the nursing career,

Dating back to the 1700’s, nursing was a profession that only women were part of and the home was “the center of health care”. Where as now, the number of males in this profession continues to increase and almost all nursing takes place in other establishments such as hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes. Additionally, nursing was never seen as a reputable profession. It took until after the Civil War for people to have more respect for the profession (Evolution of Nursing, 2014). Nursing is continuously changing and expanding. According to John Hopkins the future of nursing centers around four themes; “improving and increasing nursing education, supporting nurses in practicing to the fullest extent of their education and training, creating a culture and systems in which nurses act as full partners with other healthcare professionals, and collecting better nursing workforce data” (Brooks, 2011). Over the years, collaboration has become much more prevalent and results with fewer errors and redundancies. As years progress, it will continue to grow. Furthermore, education is becoming a very important aspect of nursing. Most workplaces require a bachelor’s degree to be hired, whereas in the past it didn’t matter. Personally, I know I will pursue my Bachelors of Science in Nursing and hopefully continue on to my
