America 's beauty industry affects the perceptions of beauty in the African American community by placing white beauty on a platform. According to Google, Mainstream is the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are regarded as normal or conventional; the dominant trend in opinion, fashion, or the arts. The mainstream beauty ideal is almost exclusively white (How White Ideals 2). Therefore, for any Black woman to attempt to define her self-worth through the eyes of mainstream society, is irrational. Black Women are rating their beauty on a scale that was never designed for them to come out as top contenders (Knight 1).

During the colonial era, the idea that Indians with light skin were was also superior. The belief that a light complexion is superior to a darker one is embroidered deeply within the Indian culture. Research conducted by a marriage website in three northern Indian states confirmed that skin tone is the most important criteria when selecting a partner (Ware 3).
A journalist wrote: "it is being called ‘Snow White syndrome ' in India, a market where sales of whitening creams are far outstripping those of Coca-Cola and tea." According to Imani Perry, this practice exemplifies the perverse objectification of the female body in sexual partnering.
