“Every girl deserves to feel good about herself and see how beautiful she really is- physical beauty is a false concept, and, at the same time, falsely equating beauty with goodness and self-worth. If you don’t see perfection in the mirror, it suggests, you’ve been duped by the media and suffer from low self-esteem.” (Postrel, 2007). We live in a society where girls need to be six feet tall and a size two to be considered beautiful, a society where men have fixed ideas of a perfect women; an unattainable beauty that is both destructive and unhealthy. As seen in American The Beautiful, for years now society has placed so much importance on physical appearance and disregarded the things that truly make a woman beautiful. But who is really to blame? Is it the men for the discouraging views, or is it the media, which allows women to be filled with self-doubt and men to have unrealistic expectations?

Movie Summary
The movie specifically studies the beauty and fashion industries in America that have made it to be an obsession for women consumers to look a certain, leading to a national effect of one’s physical and mental health. In American the Beautiful it becomes quite obvious that the standard for beauty in the American society is for one to be slender, young, upper class and white without noticeable physical imperfections (Zones, 2000). This stereotype for beauty only involves a small portion of the American population. The film deals with businesses and industries that are constantly delaying the message that women need to obtain this beauty that is both unobtainable and destructive. This movie has made me realize how silly that all sounds, because we are all already fit and healthy, and I blame the media for making us and so many females feel like they aren’t enough. I know I am guilty for trying to reach this unobtainable beauty, as I consciously feel that the way I look or feel isn’t enough and I never feel as though I have reached my goal, as once I have there is a new one to meet. Media has made me feel that perfection is impossible to reach, which is doing exactly what industries wish in making women like myself continue to consume their products. I’ve learned this level of perfection woman are expected to meet is simply unreachable and unrealistic. Dove is right, this is no wonder in why our perception of beauty is destroyed (Postrel, 2007).
