Education was, still, and will always be the most important foundation for each society, country and nation. Many writers and criticizers tend to search for the most efficient ways of educating. However, there are many litterateurs who find many problems about the American education. The authors of the book The Academy in Crisis argue, “They include stress on some of the core values of universities and of science-values like openness, collaboration, and collegiality-and pressure, too, on other central institutional responsibilities, such as the education of undergraduates” (WIKIPEDIA).
Benjamin Barber, Allan Bloom, and Deborah Tannen are authors who searched and found problems, in their points of view, in American education, and at first glance, their arguments are mostly different. Each one has his own perspective of the problems that exist in universities.
First of all, the problem that Barber sees is that American universities produce global consumers instead of global citizens because of commercialization. Advertisements and commercials are everywhere nowadays. In Barber’s point of view, education had been used as a commercialized tool. It brings money to the institutions that provide advertisements to the universities therefor; they can own their students. Barber indicates many ways and places that ads became popular by. He illustrated that advertisers used screens to spread them. There is the large screen, which is “determined by multinational corporations that control information, technology, communication, sports, and entertainment.” Secondly, medium screens, like television, was used to teleport the images that wanted to be watched by people. Finally, I disagree with Tannen because debating in general has its own power of revealing the truth although it does not work that way each time. Debating, for sure, helps people to think out of the box and express their opinions and comparing them to find appropriate solutions. Also I disagree with her about the girls who don’t have the chance to illustrate their points because a lot of girls, including the ones in my class, do participate and express their opinions and sometimes can agree or disagree with an author’s thesis or a scientific theory.
In conclusion, many authors do write if they had any concerns about something, and do write to earn some money too. They, for sure, open our eyes on something that wasn’t that clear to us, but that does not mean they are right because they also do mistakes.
