Ban on Tobacco Advertisements in India
In favor of tobacco advertising ban: Being responsible for the welfare of its citizens, the Government of India (GOI) sought better to ban tobacco companies from advertising their products. It’s beneficial to ban such advertising because of teen smoking prevention. By promoting tobacco less or not at all, the adolescents were presumed to use the products less until they they no longer used them in the long run. Tobacco advertisements were instigating tobacco use in the teen population. In accordance to the case study the four countries (Finland, Norway, New Zealand and France) that had already banned tobacco advertising, it showed that tobacco consumption had effectively decreased within the adolescent population (Finland, by thirty-seven percent ( 37%); Norway, by twenty-six percent ( 26%), New Zealand, by twenty-one percent (21%), and France, by fourteen percent (14%)). Theses results would decrease the rates for those who get gum and heart diseases caused by tobacco.
Against tobacco advertising ban: Tobacco consumption is one’s free choice, specially adults. The advertising doesn’t have as great of an influence on adult’s as it would on teenagers. Even teenagers are old to distinguish the difference between good and bad. If they choose to smoke it though their own free will. The advertisement of tobacco doesn’t physically walk them to the store or the seller, nor grab their hands, put them in their pockets, pull out some cash and buy it for them. It’s all free will. Banning the advertisement of tobacco should mean banning the production of tobacco products as well. The companies insist that they are promoting brand choices and not smoking. As long as they keep making cigarettes and it’s legal for it to be sold and bought, then the advertising isn’t what a government should be worried about. Certainly, one can’t legally buy it in the U.S if they’re underaged, but it doesn’t mean that minors don’t smoke it. Therefore, since it’s one’s free will to buy and consume tobacco, it’s their responsibility to suffer the consequences. Banning the advertisements is stripping entertainment producers, actors, and television networks of profits. Even those who promote as non-smokers would be strip of those profits because they would have been on television promoting healthy lives away from cigarettes if it wasn’t for the manufacturing of cigarettes in the first place. Therefore, if they want to ban the advertisement of the products, the manufacturing of the product should be ceased as well.
