I decided to use the awareness model to analyze my own behavior to make sense of why my group members responded to me in the manner that they did. I noticed when we had our first in class group assignment, I was unsure about the assignment so my group automatically responded by letting me express my point last during the class discussion. This didn’t bother me because I’m not always confident in my answers but it was the fact that everyone had this mental mutual agreement to let me answer last. This could be because I wasn’t paying attention to the actual assignment and probably appeared to be careless or undereducated to my peers. That was when I labeled her as “laptop girl”; as in the girl who would probably uses her laptop and maybe even her phone for everything, even when it’s unnecessary. I stereotyped her as one of those people that are always of Facebook in the back of the class. She did take charge by suggesting that we use GroupMe and taking the initiative to add everyone, which showed me she does not mind being held responsible for distributing information to group members. Another thing I picked up from the first day is that she was late, not by much, but still not on time. I was not sure if she would be dependable in the long run. Once we met up at Walk-Ons, I noticed she talked A LOT and mostly about herself. I understand it was a “getting to know you” lunch but some of the details about her life that she revealed to us could have simply remained in her head. I hate to admit but I see Kam as ‘the deserter’. Not in the way that she’ll leave the group high and dry but she did spend a lot of time on her phone and does seem to act like she doesn’t need to work as hard.
