Learning how a vehicle works can be very helpful to learn to get to see how everything comes together and makes a vehicle run properly. There are a few main components that allow a vehicle to run properly such as the engine, cooling system, drive train, brakes, electrical system and the exhaust. It’s very important that all of these components work properly for the vehicle to run efficiently. Without one of these components the vehicle may not run at all or it will run but will not be able to stop or may be polluting the earth more than usual. That’s why it is so interesting to know how all the components of an efficient running vehicle come together for that smooth peaceful ride. A vehicle must have an engine of some kind in order to convert gasoline, diesel, or some other kind of fuel source in to motion, which will propel the vehicle forward. Gasoline engines now use internal combustion, which burns the fuel inside the engine. Currently gasoline powered cars or trucks use a four-stroke combustion cycle to convert gasoline into motion. The four strokes of the cycle are the intake stroke, compression stroke, combustion stroke, and the exhaust stroke. This cycle is completed in the cylinders of the engine, which consist of pistons that are connected to the crankshaft by connecting rods. During the intake stroke the piston starts at the top, the intake valve will open letting in the proper amount of air and gasoline. It only takes a tiny drop of gasoline to make the process work. Next the piston moves back up to compress the mixture of fuel and air; this is called the compression stroke. After the compression stroke comes the combustion stroke. On this stroke, when the piston reaches the top the spark plug will ignite... ... middle of paper ... ...w.popularmechanics.com/cars/how-to/repair-questions/1302716>. 10 march 2014 . Automobiles are American's second largest investment after real estate. It is impoprtant to understand how to keep your car performing at its best.
Most motor vehicles today use an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) to give them power to drive down the road; ICEs are a form of a heat engine. Gasoline is burned to push a piston, which in return forces the car down the road. As the gas in the cylinder is ignited and expanded it forces the piston down the shaft. The force is carried through piston, which is connected to a crankshaft. The force moves through the transmission, down the driveshaft, and out the tires. The Otto Cycle is used to turn as much heat into the driving force as possible.
The piston is pushed up and causes compression. At just the right moment the spark plug sparks and ignites the mixture. When the gas explodes it pushes the piston back down.
Insert the key, turn, and vroom. And down the road you go. Most people take for granted the strange conglomeration of metal and plastic under that sheet of metal either in front or back of their vehicle. The engine as you may have guessed, is modern marvel- so to speak. They’re found in cars, trucks, boats, airplanes…All with various power outputs.
exercise the fuel and the air. Also the petrol engine utilizes the spark plugs which the
Vehicles move by propulsion, a form of energy conversion. It changes the stored form into movement. Railroad locomotives use a diesel engine that converts chemical energy in kerosene into a turning motion that drives an electric generator. The electricity from this powers the locomotive’s motors, giving it enough propulsion to move. Newer automobiles use an internal combustion engine and battery to provide hybrid propulsion. This pairing helps with the overuse
is not so hard to predict that internal combustion engine automobiles will serve humanity for many years. The three more important aspects of internal combustion engines ...
For the times in life where the automobile doesn’t work like it use to before. This is the person behind keeping the automobiles in top shape so in any weather, and always making them start under any condition other than if the gas tank was empty. The automotive technician is needed for society because this person corrects one’s automobile problems in all shapes and sizes; he or she performs regular maintenance, major engine repair, and other unnoticable problems not seen to the naked eye.
The average driver doesn’t think about what keeps their car moving or what keeps them on the road, but that’s because they don’t have to. The average driver doesn’t have to worry about having enough downforce to keep them on the road or if they will reach the adhesive limit of their car’s tires around a turn. These are the things are the car designers, professional drivers, racing pit crews, serious sports car owners, and physicist think about. Physics are an important part of every sports and racing car design. The stylish curves and ground effects on sports cars are usually there not just for form but function as well allowing you to go speeds over 140 mph in most serious sports cars and remain on the road and in reasonable control.
In this report I will explain the fuel systems in an automobile. I will cover different parts and how they work. First thing to do is explain how the fuel system works. The purpose of the fuel system is to store and supply fuel to the cylinder chamber where it can be mixed with air then vaporized and burned to produce energy. The fuel, which can be either gas or diesel is stored in a fuel tank. A fuel pump draws the fuel from the gas tank through lines and brings it through a fuel filter. Next it goes to either a carburetor or fuel injector and then delivered to the cylinder chamber for combustion.
The invention of internal combustion engines in the early 19th century has led to the discovery of utilisation of cheap energy that is petroleum and this enabled the world to develop and progress into the modern world today. Humans were able to accomplish more work done with little manual labour, using internal combustion engines powered by fossil fuels. Internal combustion engine are mechanical power devices that convert heat energy to mechanical energy with the combustion process taking place in a system boundary (Rolle, 2005). Among the internal combustion engine invented in the 19th century were the Otto engine, Diesel engine and gas turbine engine. Gas turbine engine is one of the popular engines used today due to its high torque per weight ratio relative to other types of internal combustion engines. As explained by Cengel and Boles (2011), the gas turbine engine works on a 6 stages process, namely air intake, compression, fuel injection, combustion, expansion and exhaust (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).
This along with the lighter construction of a two-stroke makes it the preferred motor used in small vehicles and tools (Two Stroke Engine). A two-stroke engine is operated by first drawing the mixture of fuel and air into the chamber by the vacuum caused by the upward stroke of the piston. During the downward piston stroke, the poppet valve is forced closed due to the increased pressure within the chamber. The mixture is compressed in the chamber throughout the stroke. As the stroke ends, the intake port is exposed allowing the mixture to escape into the main cylinder, expelling the exhaust gasses in the process and some of the fuel mixture as well. Momentum then causes the piston to rise, compressing the mixture as another stroke is beginning. Once the stroke reaches its peak, the spark plug will ignite the mixture causing the fuel to expand driving the piston down thus completing the cycle while additionally initiating a new
In a world that is quickly becoming ever dependant on technology, people take many things for granted. For example: nearly every day you and I get into our cars to go to work, school, shopping, or anywhere else you can think of. Naturally, car manufacturers are constantly coming up with new technologies to get people to buy their car over the next manufacturers; and a lot of these new inventions seem straight out of a sci-fi movie, or book in this case.
Most people today fill up their car with different qualities of petrol, because that's what the average car takes. They don't usually consider an alternative for the petrol that they load into their cars. Although petrol is widely used, it is not the only source for a car to get its power from; diesel and electricity are alternatives to the general petrol used by most cars. Although different from each other, diesel and electricity are alternatives to the average gasoline received at a gas station. Diesel is a more concentrated type of fuel that is usually used by big automobiles because they require a lot of power in a little amount of time. Electricity is a method that uses the power of batteries to produce a low horsepower but, nevertheless fast automobile. Electric cars are generally created to be soundless and environment friendly. The purpose of this paper is to classify and educate the reader of the different types of fuel available for an automobile to use: petrol, diesel, and electricity. The general petrol, used by most people, is usually the only type of fuel accepted on the average car in the United States today.
