Autocratic leaders uses an authoritarian manner and dictates what is going on without consulting athletes. It is characterised by absolute individual control over group members and very little input from them in the decision making process. If the autocratic leader is the most knowledgeable person in the group it usually leads to fast, effective decisions being made. This type of leadership best suits athletes who are in need of support and answers. This is because this leadership style prevents a person from doing their own thing and they are solely guided by what the leader does. It best suits those who highly value extrinsic motivation because with the leader having all decision making power the athlete is motivated not by themselves but …show more content…
It combines elements of an absolute authoritarian manner in decision making with the elements of consulting and asking group members to be a part of the decision making process. Although decisions are partially controlled by group members, the leader is there to offer guidance and still hold final decision making power. This type of leadership style suits athletes who have their own answers to share with the group because if they disagree with the coach they have the opportunity to voice their opinion and create their own solution or prove a point instead of having to abide by whatever the coach demands even if they dislike it. It also satisfies the needs of athletes who are intrinsically motivated. This is due to their being less of an emphasis on authoritarian control, athletes are unable to get all their motivation extrinsically from that source (Leader) so athletes must have motivation from intrinsic sources if this leadership style is going to …show more content…
Dominant leadership style.
The dominant leadership style adopted by Coach Boone is an autocratic leadership style. There is no doubt that Coach Boone is at the top of this football food chain and his dominance and control is readily displayed in the team atmosphere.
The first sign is Coach Boone’s first team meeting in the school gym (approximately 0:12:00). He lays down the law for the training camp and season, “We leave for camp, Gettysburg College. August 15th 7:29AM. If you report at 7:30 you WILL not be playing football this season”. There is emphasis on ‘will’ because it outlines that there will be no exception or excuse that would alter his decision, his decision is final. He makes them aware that “This is no democracy, it is a dictatorship. I am the law”. Laws cannot be evaded and his decisions as a coach will not be either. (A dictatorship is very closely related to the elements of autocratic
When Boone was appointed to the position of football coach at T.C. Williams High School, he became the visionary of success to the program. His vision for the team from the beginning was to win a state championship. As a leader one must be a visionary and have an ultimate goal that needs to be accomplished. Difficult situations continuously present themselves and need to be handled effectively in order to accomplish the leader’s vision, which often occurred during Boone’s journey with his team. Throughout the film, no matter what circumstances Boone encountered, he was able to stay focused on the goal of winning a championship which consequently allowed the team to

STYLES OF LEADERSHIP An autocratic leadership style is one where the manager sets objectives, allocates tasks, and insists on obedience. Therefore the group becomes dependent on him or her. The result of this style is the members of the group are often dissatisfied with the leader. This results in little cohesion, the need for high levels of supervision, and poor levels of motivation amongst employees. A democratic leadership style encourages participation in decision making.
It is clear to us that Boone did in fact face a challenge that he overcame. He wanted to be accepted by the community by proving that he was a valued member of it, a valuable football coach. In order to do this he had to prove that he could coach The Titans through all of their games, this required team unity. He gained the respect and acceptance of the football players in order to encourage their unity. He knew that only through their unity could they succeed. It is not the mere challenge that Boone faced that gained merit; it was what he succeeded in doing that was the real important achievement, succeeding to prove to the community that they could indeed be united.
Lewin, Leppit, and White were cautious in the conclusions the drew from this study. They noted that autocratic leadership does get results and is preferred over democratic leadership. However they observed that autocratic leadership can create tension, apathy, frustration, and dependence by the group on the leader. Further, the researchers found that some of the differences in the behaviors of the children were associated with the presence or absence of the leader. Specifically, constructive effort declined in the autocratically controlled children groups. Finally, they observed very little value in laissez-faire control ---an essentially “no-leader” approach to leadership.
My style of leadership according to the quiz by Cherry (n.d.) is participative leadership which is a type of leadership that engages the members of the team to participate in decision making and problem solving while the leader makes the final judgment in the deliberation process. This style of leadership allows members who are experts in their fields provide input to reach a more effective and accurate decision. This fits exactly into my leadership style. I always believed that in every aspect there is a greater or lesser person than you are, so, why not focus on the best in others and tap on their expertise in knowledge or skill to get the best results.
The extreme leadership style of the Authoritarian can have a negative effect on team members. A characteristic of this leader is one who makes all the decisions and passes the directives to subordinates who are expected to carry these out under very close supervision. Because open communication is vital to any project, these perceptions can hurt team performance.
After completing the “Leadership Style Questionnaire” and analyzing my results, I have learned what my preferred leadership style is and how that influences how I lead and may be perceived from members of the group. From the results attained from the questionnaire, my preferred style of leadership is directing. This type of leadership style is best for individuals who have a low competency and high commitment level. These types of leaders are highly focused on tasks and less focused on relationships. They make decisions without consulting with the group and communicate without regarding the group’s concerns or suggestions. This type of leader also supervises the followers intently. They are very successful in creating objectives for each follower and the group as a whole to guide the group in reaching a certain goal.
Boone and Yost were supportive by establishing good relations with subordinates. They used the participative style where they allow the team to participate in decisions, both coaches were achievements-oriented where they sets challenging goals and seeks improvements in performance. Boone and Yost inspired the team to find solutions to the problems they are facing, because finding solutions is a motivating force for the team.
Autocratic leadership theory is a part of the behavioural approach. In this leadership theory, leader makes all decisions and uses power to command and control the followers to achieve goal. According to Lewin(1939), “autocratic leaders are associated with high-performing groups, but that close supervision is necessary and feeling of hostility are often present” (p.173). It is incredibly efficient and tasks are completed quickly. Autocratic leadership can be beneficial when decisions need to be making quickly. For example, in emergency situation surgeon uses this theory because the patient’s situation is between life and death and there is no time to discuss with other members. Bass (2008) mentioned in the Leadership styles and theories article, “Autocratic leaders can be effective because they create good structure, and determine what needs to be done. They provide rewards for compliance, but punish disobedience” (Giltinane, 2013, p. 35-37).
...esearch of the situation. This leadership style is beneficial in situations where a quick decision is necessary. The downside to this type of leadership is people who tend to use an autocratic leadership style are seen as controlling and dictatorial. This type of behavior can lead to resentment with the other group members.
Coach Herman Boone, who is played by Denzel Washington, is a very influential person. He is a perfect leader. While it cannot be found out for sure, Coach Boone can be classified under the trait theory of management, that “Leaders are Born”. The type of leadership he displays cannot be taught, he is able to bring together two different types of groups to act as one, to respect each other and play together. He shows power in the movie, he has a large capacity to influence others. Using his power, he gets the players to conform and forget how others think they are supposed to act towards each other. The goal specificity is also clear in the movie. Coach Boone expects his team to be ‘perfect’, he expects them to win the Virginia State Championship. Former head coach and now assistant coach Bill Yoast, played by Will Patton, is also a very influential person and good leader. He is in charge...
In autocratic leadership style, the leaders take direction ship and make decision in own. They do not transfer any domination to the others.
32). Ultimately, these leaders are able to tie together career aspirations with personal goals in addition to developing long-term plans in order to reach long-term goals (Money-Zine, 2016). Leaders who use this style provide feedback to their workers in addition to being experts on delegating assignments in order to finish tasks in a timely manner. Overall, leaders who use this style have a genuine interest in helping others succeed (Money-Zine, 2016). There are many benefits when using a coaching leadership style such as the positive workplace environment, employees know exactly what is expected of them, and the one-on-one style helps to develop individuals in order to improve their performance and to reach their goals. In terms of negative aspects of this style it not only takes time but it also takes patience in part by the leader. This style of leadership can also backfire if employees feel they are being “micromanaged” as this undermines their self confidence (Murray,
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
